Samantha Carter hurried down the halls of the SGC, brushing a stray lock of blonde hair from her face. She had to get out of that gate room, and fast, she couldn't face even looking at the colonel since they had come back from Edora "Damn I need to get this hair cut," she murmured to herself, trying to pretend like she didn't care and also trying to maintain her composure as she opened the door to her lab. She closed the door swiftly behind her and turned the key in the lock. She made her way to her desk, sat down and laid her head on her arms. All she wanted to do right now was curl up into a small ball and die. He wasn't happy to be home, he wanted to stay with HER. The words ran around in her head, alien to her. Her shoulders started to shake and she felt warm tears stinging her eyes. She closed them, but every time she did, the same images and sounds flashed up in her memory. The sound of him telling HER that he wasn't happy to be going, and the unforgettable image of them kissing. Even though she had turned away, she had turned back round just in time to see them, and now the image would never be erased from her mind. The image flashed up again, taunting her, and the more she remembered, the harder the tears came. She opened her eyes and blinked a couple of times. She suddenly realised what she was doing. Sam Carter never cried, especially over a man, but this wasn't just some random guy, this was...the tears threatened to return. She gave herself a mental kick and reached for the tissues.

"No" she said aloud "I won't let him do this to me, I mean, it wasn't like we were dating or something"

Her heart started to thud at that. Dating. Something she had been wishing these past couple of years, in fact, something she had been wishing ever since those first couple of weeks with Colonel Jack O'Neill. But hey, dream on, he was her CO and the regs would never let it happen, but now she was sure he did not feel the same way about her like she felt about him.

"Well" she thought, "Sitting around feeling sorry for myself won't help matters, seeing as we're on downtime for a while I'll go home and get some much needed sleep, no thanks to him!" she added at the end with a hint of resent in her voice

She packed up some stuff to work on while she was at home, grabbed her laptop and headed out of her lab towards the lifts. Just as she was about to press the lift call button, she thought she had better drop by Daniel's office to let him know she was going home. So she left her things by the lift and walked in that direction. As she neared his office she could hear voices coming from the slightly ajar door, she recognised Daniel's voice immediately He was talking in an odd tone, she couldn't quite put her finger on the mood, a mix of soothing and irritation in his voice. She crept towards the door; the other voice in the room started talking and Sam needed all the willpower in the world not to gasp. Jack

"She thought...? Oh my God Daniel what have I done?"

"I don't know Jack, she looked really upset when she saw, I really think she thought you loved Laira and resented coming back"

"I had to ask her to come with me Daniel, I lived in her house for three goddamn months! But Sam thinks I love her?"

"That's what I said"

"How in the heck would she think that I love her? I don't"

"Well Jack she did see you with her, and she did hear what you said to her" the irritation was creeping back into Daniel's voice

"That didn't mean anything, Laira didn't mean anything, I was just on my own and I didn't think there would be any way I would be getting back home"

"Oh Jack..."

"Don't "Oh Jack" me, Daniel you don't understand I lo..."

Sam decided she had heard enough and chose this moment to enter Daniel's office. Both men's heads shot up at the sound of her entering. She looked straight at Daniel and refused to let her eyes meet Jack's, which were begging her to meet his.

"Just to let you know Daniel I'm going home so call me if there's anything?"

She quickly walked out before either of them could say anything, breathing a sigh of relief and leaning against the wall for a minute. After a few seconds she proceeded down the corridor back towards the lifts, Jack's words running through her head. So he didn't love HER after all, but he still kissed her so she must have meant something to him. Right now all she wanted to think about was her large bathtub and large double bed at home, she didn't need these extra thoughts right now. She picked up her things where she had left them, she reached out to press the button when she heard a voice just behind her, barely audible, a whisper of a word:

"Sam..."

She whirled around and was met by a familiar pair of chocolate brown eyes just inches from hers, she remembered not to act hurt but it was too late, she had already let the hurt be seen, and the tears were now shimmering in her eyes. She turned away from him:

"Is there something you wanted sir?"

"Yeah there is" And with that Jack took her face in his hands and kissed her, his lips grazing hers gently before becoming more passionate.

Sam pulled away abruptly; the disgust, hurt and rage clear on her face.

"Why are you doing this to me? Do you think you can just push me away when you're with HER and then suddenly kiss me like nothing has happened? What are you trying to do here?" she moved towards the lifts.

"Sam, please listen to me, I didn't mean..." he moved in front of her, blocking her path.

"I don't want to hear it Colonel I don't care, things like this won't solve anything, you pushed me away on Edora, after all the hard work I did for three months. Well, you know what? I wish I'd never tried to get you home, I wish I'd left you there, just like you wanted!"

She stormed past him into the lift, leaving him standing there with his head in his hands. When the lift was fully on its descent she dropped everything she was carrying and started to sob uncontrollably. She didn't mean a word of what she had just said; she didn't mean to hurt him, she just wanted him to know how much she was hurting inside. The lift stopped and she grabbed everything and ran to her car.

"Everything will be OK once I get a bath and some sleep" she thought "No more thinking about Jack O'Neill, not tonight."

And, with that, she started up the engine and pulled out of the parking lot.

Several hours later, Sam was lying on her couch watching TV. She had not been able to sleep without thinking of Jack and how awful and selfish she must have sounded. After all, he was the one trapped on the planet for months, if she was him she would have given up too. But didn't he have faith in her? Didn't he even consider she would try and get him home? And did or does Laira mean anything to him? Sam had a funny feeling that she did and whenever she thought that, she felt sick. She turned back to the TV:

"You are the love of my life Ebony," A man with a rather long moustache shouted to a woman standing on a balcony

"Oh Eric, take me away from this place, where no rules keep us apart" The woman swooned.

"I cannot my love, for the Baron will be back soon, and he prohibits me from coming here" the moustache man returned

Sam switched it off, "what stupid garbage" she thought to herself. She checked her watch, 2300 hours. She decided to give sleep another try. She started to ascend the stairs but just as she got to the top the doorbell rang. She sighed:

"Go away Colonel"

"It's not Jack, it's me" Daniel's voice came through the letterbox.

Sam opened the door "Hey Daniel, whats..." the words died on her lips as she saw who stood behind Daniel.

"I'm sorry Sam but he threatened me with death if I didn't help him and I knew you wouldn't open the door if it was just...you know...him" Daniel looked embarrassed.

"It's OK Daniel, I think you've helped enough" Sam forced a smile

Daniel just smiled in return and whispered "Hear him out Sam, for both your sakes" and he turned on his heel, got in his car and drove off, leaving Jack and Sam standing on Sam's doorstep avoiding each other's eyes.

"Err...I couldn't sleep" Jack broke the silence but still not looking at Sam "I felt so bad about what you had said and..."

"No no no, it should be me that feels bad sir, I was totally out of line. I didn't mean a word of what I said. I'm...I'm sorry"

"You are?"

"Yeah"

They stood in silence for some time but still not meeting each other's eyes. Finally Jack again broke their silence:

"Could I come in? I think we need to talk and I don't like talking where your neibours can see me"

Sam opened the door wider so he could get past her, as he passed his arm brushed hers and she felt a tingle go up and down her arm. "Snap out of it Sam, he's just here to talk" she scolded herself and followed him into the living room.

She sat down on the opposite end of the sofa from him "So..." she started

"So"

"Do you wanna start from the beginning or..."

"Sam..."

"Why do you keep calling me Sam?"

"Because it's your name"

"But you've never called me it before"

"OK...Sam, here's the thing, when I was trapped on Edora I thought there was no hope of ever coming home so I decided to settle down into a normal life again. But the whole time I was there I thought about you every day. Normal things like what are you doing right now? Are you thinking of me? Do you ever think of me? I missed you like hell when I was trapped there but I couldn't dwell on the past when I didn't think I'd ever see you again. Laira offered me her home and I thought that if I settled down, I'd forget all about Earth, the SGC, you."

He stopped and stared at Sam for a long time, she just stared at the floor unable to say anything. He had never opened up to her like this before. He resumed:

"After a while it seemed like I'd almost forgotten, but then Laira asked me a...a...a favour if you like"

He was beginning to get uncomfortable; Sam turned her eyes up to look at him just at the same time he looked at her. Their eyes met and held.

"She...she....asked me....asked being the prime word here...she asked me if....I would give her....another child"

"Oh" Sam turned her gaze back towards the carpet

"Sam...Sam please look at me, I only did it because I thought I could forget you, but it didn't work, you were all I could think about. After that I couldn't get you out of my head. I was happy to see you when you came to get me but I had just given Laira a child and I couldn't just leave her there, that's why I asked her to come with me, so she wouldn't be alone."

"Then why didn't you want to leave?" the tears were starting to appear in Sam's eyes

"I don't know, might be because I lived with her for such a long time and I got used to the place or that I could have grown to love her."

Sam couldn't take the pain any more, she knew she loved Jack, but he didn't love her back. He was prepared to settle down with Laira. Her thoughts turned back to a couple of hours earlier when they were at the lifts. Why hadn't she just left him there where he was happy?

"What are you doing here sir?"

"I'm here to explain the truth to you that I never loved Laira and that words cant describe how happy I am to be home and to thank you for bringing me home. And the name is Jack, we're on downtime."

"OK then Jack...Why did you kiss me earlier?"

Jack tensed at her words. He had been waiting for her to ask him this question. He shifted closer to her on the sofa, took a deep breath and explained:

"I kissed you because I knew you had been listening outside Daniel's door, I knew by the way you refused to look at me when you came in. When you wouldn't look at me, I knew you had heard what I said about me thinking I loved you and..."

"Hold up." Sam was confused, she'd never heard anything like that "What are you talking about sir, I mean Jack, I never heard you say that."

"You didn't? Oh God" Jack sank back into the sofa and put his hands over his face.

Sam's heart was beating ten times faster than its normal rate, "He thinks he loves me" she thought to herself happily, she looked cross at Jack who was shaking his head in his hands and groaning. She reached across and pulled his hands away before scooting closer to him. She made his eyes meet hers, "Jack?" she started, "Do you think you love me?"

"Sam, I don't think I love you any more, I know I do. That's why I kissed you earlier, because I wanted you to know that I knew and that it was alright and we'd get through this, plus I wanted to" he added, going slightly red, "I wanted you to see that we can get through this together...as in...us, together. But there's no point in saying that now because you never..."

"And you've shown me Jack and I think we can get through this too" Sam cut in "As in...us, together" she added with a small smile.

"You really mean it Sam, do you really want this?"

"Of course I want it Jack, I've wanted it for years, ever since I first started serving under you..."

She didn't have a chance to finish her sentence as a warm pair of lips had clamped themselves over hers, Sam wrapped her arms around him and they remained there for some time. A couple of minutes later Jack shifted so he could get his arm further around Sam and as he did so the TV switched on, the moustache man appeared on the screen:

"Ebony, I fear I must tell you my dreadful secret, while you were helping the poor and needy in India I missed you sorely. Unable to hide from my sorrow I had an affair."

"Oh Eric how can we possible be together now?"

"I am dreadfully sorry my love, she meant nothing to me, but now I have received a letter from her, telling me she is with child and that I am this child's father."

"Eric, if you are caught committing bigamy you will be thrown into a pit of lime and left to burn in the acid, I cannot let this happen to you. We must leave, run away."

"Ebony, what about your family, your connections? Your father the Baron loves you dearly"

"They are not worth losing you, come let us go wherever the wind takes us."

"Ebony my love, I will never stop loving you" moustache man picked up the girl and they kissed."

Jack switched the TV off, "Sam, why do you watch garbage like this?" he asked smiling

Sam snuggled further into him "I don't know, maybe I..."

Jack looked down at Sam who was asleep in his arms. Happiness pulsed through him, finally he had got what he had been wishing for these past couple of years, he knew that they as a couple could get through this and nothing was going to stop their new found happiness. He pulled her closer to him and closed his eyes, waiting for sleep to claim him.

That's it! Depending on the feedback I might write a sequel. Please feedback me, it's my first fic so go easy and I would quite like to write more. Please please please lol.
