Sam dropped to her knees and put her fingers to the pulse at his jaw. "Thank God" she breathed. Daniel was coming round. She raised his head slightly and leaned over him. Lost in his blue eyes, she kissed him gently. For a moment he hesitated, then responded passionately, softly tracing the line of her cheek. They drew apart. "What came over me ?" thought Sam, "What have I done ?" She realised he was still watching her. "We'd better get moving" he said, pulling himself into a sitting position.

*************************

She hadn't seen him since the kiss. She knew he'd been avoiding her and guessed the Colonel had asked him to drop by to see why she was running late. "Nearly there" she said, assuming he'd continue on his way. He took her by surprise. When she looked up and saw him leaning against the bench, she nearly dropped the delicate instrument she was packing. Her heart was pounding as his piercing gaze captured her own. "You remember" she whispered, a statement, not a question. Daniel's eyes broke away towards the floor. "Yes".

1. She was never sure when she'd begun to fall in love with him. He'd been off limits, his wife in Goa'uld hands, Sam had been both surprised and ashamed to catch herself thinking about him more and more. "Supposing he realises..." she thought, "Would it matter so much ?" She guessed he suspected her of a crush - as an ex-teacher, he was used to that. They'd worked through the night together, trying to understand the old orb from the dead planet. She'd known he was about to say something....then the Colonel had interrupted with his "good morning campers" routine. Later, Daniel had made a joke about Lieutenant Simmons having a crush on her - and Sam knew the moment had passed.

2. So long as she didn't say anything, it was ok, no-one would know how she really felt. It was like playing hide-and-seek with her young nephew, who thought no-one could see him if his eyes were shut. But the old man's body had been in a coma and was fading fast, taking her friend's personality with it. "Daniel, you can't die on me now" she'd said. And suddenly, he'd been awake again and the expression behind Machello's eyes had been pure Daniel. "It's nice to know you don't just like me for my looks" he'd said. Out of sheer relief she'd dropped a kiss on the top of his head. It was going to be all right.

3. But it hadn't been all right, Share had been killed and Daniel, immersed in grief, had withdrawn from the growing emotional charge of their relationship. She hadn't blamed him. Through months of trying to convince herself that it hadn't mattered, she'd found herself drawn towards relationships which would never go anywhere - Martouf, Narim and above all, Jack. And then one night, they'd worked late in Daniel's office. He'd laughed as her eyes scrunched up from the pain of stretching out the tensions in her neck, then suddenly, he'd been behind her, massaging her shoulders with a firm touch. She'd smiled her thanks - he'd kissed her, gently at first, then more passionately as she'd responded. He'd drawn back, reminding her that they had an early start the next day. "When we get back....", he'd promised.

4. But it had been too late. He'd come back from Kelowna with a fatal dose of radiation poisoning. She'd tried to save him with the healing device, she'd been overcome with grief when it had actually made things worse. Waiting until he was alone, she'd slipped into the infirmary, intent on telling him the truth. "I don't know why we wait to tell people how we really feel" she'd begun, "I guess I hoped that you always knew..." Still the words wouldn't come, but as the tears streamed down her face, he'd made an effort to comfort her, straining to cover her shaking hand with his bandaged one.

5. They couldn't have left without him. She'd gone into the tent to persuade him to come back with them and found herself giving a passionate account of her old friend to a man who'd looked just like him, but whose memory was a blank sheet. She'd stood up to leave, suddenly needing to put some distance between them , remembering the coolness of his greeting that last time on Abydos. She'd got to the entrance when he'd stopped her. "Samantha Carter ?" She'd turned, hopefully. "Was there ever anything....between us ?" Sam had thought of the friendship she'd missed so much, how close they'd become, how the night before that mission to Kelowna had seemed so full of promise. But she'd known she had to let him remember for himself.
