The pair walked down the corridor, avoiding the stream of students spilling through on either sides. She shook her head as she listened to his analysis of the double Maths torment he'd just had.

"And then she told me to get help." He said with a cheeky grin.

"Like therapy?" She raised her eyebrow, slightly concerned that a teacher would say that.

"No..." He smiled at her mistake, but she was pretty sure that he'd intended for her to do that. "Like academic help..."

Ah, she * so * knew where this was going. "Want some Math tutoring?" She offered as they stopped at her locker, and she threw the over-large pile of textbooks into her assigned locker.

"Thought you'd never ask." He quipped and she did nothing but raise her eyebrow.

"So what part exactly do you need assistance with?" She indicated for their walk to continue.

"Um...that'd be the whole Maths package." She rolled her eyes again, and he was sure he saw the twinkle there. Every time he cracked a joke, she'd smile.

So there was the answer the teachers were looking for.

Jack O'Neill was such a smartass because he wanted to make Samantha Carter laugh.

Who woulda thunk?

"We'll make a start on it tonight." They reached the library doors and they stood outside nervously together. "This is the part where you go and join your * other * friends." She mocked jokingly, indicating the setting.

"Yes, well, we can't all be little geniuses like you, can we?" He said as he walked away. Just before he disappeared completely down the corridor, he shouted back. "Make sure Daniel's ready for the hockey match tomorrow!"

*

She stood at the front of the crowd, people on all sides and it hit her how lucky she was. At most of her other schools, she been the major league outcast with "brains to big for her boots."

At Bennett High School, she was one of the most popular girls in school who everyone thought was funny and really intelligent. Her smile grew as she watched her friend and her private Maths student Jack O'Neill score in the hockey match.

An eruption of cheers built from the herds of people and she cheered enthusiastically too. She'd never loved a place so much as Bennett where her father was currently stationed and she knew that was down to the friends that she'd made...and Jack.

He was so different. Funny and sarcastic but he really cared for her.

And why shouldn't she have a crush on him? Most of the other popular girls did, but whenever there was a dance, he'd ask her and she'd accept.

They'd both claim strong friendship, but she knew that there was something else.

They both did.

And her cheers became louder as he scanned the crowd for his most dedicated supporter and his smile shone as their eyes met. And that tingly feeling was there again.

One of his fellow players bounded up to him and congratulated his goal and the moment was lost. But her eye was always trained on him, making sure that he was OK.

But she always had that sense of fear when she was with him; that some day he was going to get fed up waiting for her and find some other girl to be with.

But she couldn't bear to be wrong about his feelings for her and over-estimating what they felt; she treasured his friendship and didn't want to lose that.

God, she thought with a wry grin, teenage years are full of angst...

Daniel practically bounced his way to Sam after the match.

"What you looking so happy about?" She asked and he dusted himself down and accepted the offered drink.

"Didn't you see?" Daniel said puzzled and Sam raised an eyebrow a la Teal'c.

"See what?" She asked, taking back the drink and wiping the lid. As much as she loved Daniel, she did not fancy sharing bacteria with him. "You didn't do anything."

"Exactly." Daniel announced triumphantly and dragged Teal'c to where they were standing. "This is the best friend a guy could have...thanks for getting me out of playing."

Teal'c tilted his head fondly. "That is quite alright DanielJackson. But now after extensive exertion I am in need of refreshment. Samantha?" He questioned and she nodded.

"I'm gonna wait for Jack...we'll meet you at the ice cream parlour, OK?" She suggested and the pair walked off, chattering about something that Sam was sure she didn't want to know about.

After a few anxious minutes of pacing up and down the corridor outside the boy's locker room, the door opened and a thoroughly exercised Jack O'Neill walked out.

"Hey." He greeted her and then frowned. "Where are the guys?"

"Meeting them at the ice cream place." She informed him and then gestured for them to walk out of the school building. "You had a great game." She said and she saw him smile.

"Yeah. Pretty good. And I'm not even going to mention to the coach that I saw Daniel pester Teal'c to get out of the game." Jack sniggered and she couldn't help but smile.

"Mmm...he was pretty ecstatic." Sam replied and smiled gratefully as he held the door open.

"Yeah, well I helped him out of failing sport, he can help me not flunk History." Jack sighed. "I still haven't done that essay."

"Jack!" Sam admonished but couldn't help a smile fall on her lips. "That was due in two months ago."

"I know, I know." He shook his head. "Things are a little weird at home and it's hard to get anything done."

Sam bowed her head. "Know what you mean."

Jack look startled and then backed up. "God I'm sorry, I didn't mean that I was....my situation is nothing compared to...." He saw her forgiving face and stopped stuttering. "Sorry."

"It's OK." She reassured him and then a thought popped into her head. "How about you study round my place? It'd be nice to have some company other than a moody older brother. And we share the same classes so I can help you with Maths....and Physics." She added with a grin.

He rolled his eyes. "Don't even get me started on Physics."

The walk didn't take long and time seemed to pass quicker as the pair flirtatiously threw insults at each other until at the end of the road, they were met by some girls from their grade and Sam sighed heavily.

"I thought you were friends with everyone Sam." He nudged her as they walked along.

"Mm....but those three seem to have taken a particular dislike to me." She muttered just before the five met.

"Hi Jack." The brown haired girl named Alice said flicking her hair slightly and Sam couldn't help but bite back a smile at her attitude. It seems Jack couldn't either....

"Hey." He said, feigning a cough. Alice's eyes drifted appreciatively over Jack's body but looked with distaste at his companion.

"You weren't in English today." She preened herself in the mirror, before looking back to Jack pouting. Sam faked a coughing fit.

"Me and Sam bunked off." He replied, pulling his shades off his eyes.

"Really?" Alice looked amused at the thought of Sam skipping lessons. "Prim and proper Samantha Carter actually played hooky?" She turned round to her two friends who laughed. "What is the world coming to?"

Jack stepped forward, taking offence to what was being said. Sam just pursed her lips knowing that Alice Looper liked nothing better than winding her up. "Alice?"

"Yes?" She stepped forward within touching distance of his face, whispering seductively. Sam thought she was going to be sick right there.

"Do you know why I don't think you're hot?" She backed away slightly but still maintained a smile as though he was going to make a wisecrack about her being extra sexy.

"Why?"

"Because you have no personality." Jack smirked and stepped back, taking Sam's hand in his own. "Personally I prefer women who cannot only spell character, but have one."

They walked down the path, Sam in stunned silence but unable to stop grinning. Jack sauntered down the sidewalk, as cool as ever.

As they turned round the corner, Jack felt his body pushed against the building, away from prying eyes and the lips of Samantha Carter pressed again his own. Frantic lip locking and touching started until air was needed and they regretfully broke apart. Leaning their foreheads together, Sam sighed.

"I..." She started but realised she couldn't continue. She didn't want to apologise but she had no idea how he felt.

"That was amazing." He said for both of them and Sam smiled. "I meant what I said about Alice and all the rest of them at school....there's only one woman I want." He said, his dark eyes scanning her face.

She smiled bashfully. "Everyone said that Chris was going to ask me to the prom...but I realised that the only guy I need is right in front of me."

They smiled at their mutual admissions and walked to the ice cream parlour, hand in hand.

Lunch time was always Sam's favourite part of the day. The sun would shine over the school and she could sit under the lush green trees on the grass, basking in the sun whilst keeping cool under the leaves.

And well, since the confrontation with Alice, lunch times seemed that extra bit more exciting. It seemed like the whole school congregated on the lawns and Sam and Jack leaned back against the tree; her head resting against his chest and his arm wrapped around her waist.

They watched the rest of the school walk by and they'd whisper smart alec comments to each other about Alice and her friends looking like witches plotting the down fall of the world. Daniel and Teal'c ate lunch and bantered with the pair as per usual.

But something was going to rock the four best friends more than they could imagine...
