The New Guard - Part 2

What the hell was taking so long? Jack thought. Well, he knew but that didn't help right now. "Jack, for God's sake you're going to wear a whole in the floor." Daniel said with his head in his hands.

"How long's it been now?" asked Freddie from across the room.

Looking at his watched Sammie answered. "27 hours," he sighed. He was beginning to really worry about his sister.

They looked up at the sound of familiar footsteps entering the Infirmary. "Heard anything yet?" enquired Sam as she went to join her husband.

"Naw, nothin'" replied Jack. Sam guided him to a chair.

"Shouldn't be too much longer. Janet's labours were long too," she said to the rather crowded room. Over the last few hours Daniel, Jack, Sammie, Freddie and George had been joined by Jacob and the rest of SG-1 and 2.

"Well my new great grand kids are taking their precious time in making an appearance. Sam I think they get that from your mom."

Sam smiled, "Yeah, Mom was always late for everything. If I remember right it used to drive you nuts." She smiled at her father.

"Well this is nothing compared to Hailey's epic," said Major Grogan, leader of SG-2. He and Hailey had joined the SGC together and still remained good friends.

"Oh, God," groaned Jonas. "Don't I remember," he said squeezing his wife's hand. "35 hours, I remember every second." He often wished he couldn't. There were too many times when he thought he was going to lose his wife and daughter.

"Well, thankfully I remember very little," she smiled at her husband and returned the squeeze to his hand. Turning, "Hey Grogan," she called. "You and the wife have enough kids. How long did her labours last?"

"Let's see 13, 29, 14, 10, 7 and 5 hours. I think." Besides still being good at getting shot, Jack thought, he was also very good at getting his wife pregnant. Surprise, surprise, she was a nurse in the Infirmary. It wasn't a shock when they got together after all he spent enough time there. Even more than Daniel had.

"Wow, most of them were pretty short but why the 29 hours?" Major Liam O'Connell asked curiously.

"Oh, that was the twins." He said casually.

"Oh," was the only reply.

It had been along day and night and everyone was getting really tired. Various SGC members had dropped by many bringing food and beverages to sustain the waiting group.

An hour later, someone in full mask and gown emerged from the labour room. A very tired Janet pulled down her mask and smiled.

"Well Doc, don't keep us waiting we've done enough of that already," Jack said.

Finally she grinned. "Mother and babies are doing well and JJ's doing OK too."

"Janet, come on what do we have?" Sam asked in a pleading voice. Katie and JJ hadn't wanted to know what they were having. All they knew was that they were having twins. Most thought they'd have a girl and a boy. JJ and Georgia were twins after all but they all desperately wanted to know!

Her grin grew even wider if that were possible. "Two healthy, bouncing baby..." she paused for effect, "boys. They're 5lb 5oz and 5lb 7oz."

"Yes," Jack said punching the air. He turned to Daniel, who was now on his feet. They hugged each other, thrilled by the fact they had been given their grandchildren safe and sound.

In the mean time the hugs were spreading the two new Grandmas' were embracing as were the new aunt and uncles. Sam walked over to Jack looking deeply into his eyes. "Hi there Grandpa," she said in a very quiet voice so only he could hear.

"Hi there, Grandma," he whispered in to her ear as he buried his face in her hair.

"Janet can we see them?" Sam enquired.

"They're all pretty tired. But they want to see you. Sorry guys," she said turning to their friends. "I'm afraid it's going to have to be immediate family only."

"That's fine, Janet. Now we know everyone's OK, we'll see them later," Jonas replied.

During this whole episode Liam had been watching George. He'd never seen her like this. She was so excited, she could hardly stand still. She was rocking backwards and forwards on her heels and kept grabbing Freddie and Sammie's arms.

He felt a wave of jealousy pass through him. If only he could be the one that she touched. Stop it, he reprimanded himself, she's not interested. As they all turned towards the labour room, Liam placed his hand on her shoulder. He had to say something. He needed to say something. "Err," he hesitated, "will you give Katie my love."

It took all of George's self control not to shiver when Liam touched her. She raised her head to look at him as she replied. "Em, of course I will. She'll be really happy you were here." She smiled at him.

Wow she was beautiful. He really wanted to kiss her. They were now standing alone and neither one moved. It was like they were frozen to the spot, just staring into each others eyes.

The moment was broken when Freddie's head poked through the door. "Yo, sis, you coming?"

"Huh, oh yeah," she said without even looking at him. "I'll be right there." She was still looking at Liam; he was still holding her shoulder. Her heart was beating so fast she could hardly breathe.

Liam was elated by the feelings he could see in her eyes. He could literally drown in those eyes.

"Do you think we could talk later," his voice was low and husky.

George moved away from him towards the door. As she placed her hand on it to push it, she turned around and smirked, "ya, sure, you betcha." She turned and entered the room. Leaving a certain Major with a surprised expression on his face, which quickly turned into a huge grin? Oh yeah he'd see her later.

When Jack and Sam entered the room they saw each parent holding a child. Katie looked completely exhausted but extremely happy. Her fianc looked tired to but had a very silly grin on his face.

They'd decided to hold off on the wedding. They hadn't had enough time to plan the wedding that Katie wanted before she'd reached the size of a house. So they had decided to wait until she didn't have to waddle up the aisle.

Daniel bent down to kiss his daughter and looked at his grandchild. "He's beautiful, sweetheart."

"They both are," said his wife.

Jack gave his son a light punch to the arm. "Good job son" he said grinning at him. There were lots more hugs and kisses. The babies, who were sound asleep, were gently passed around their adoring family. Thankfully someone remembered to bring a camera. That too got passed around and plenty of memories were made.

"Hey, we don't know what they're called?" George stated. "We can't call em' one and two, can we? Have you decided on names yet?"

"Actually we have. He," she pointed to the fair haired child Janet held, "is Carter Frederick O'Neill and he," she pointed at the darker haired child Sam held, "is Frasier Samuel O'Neill," she stated proudly.

Jack answered for them all. "Sweet!"

Everyone was real busy that week. SG-1 minus Katie had a mission and was accompanied by Sammie. As soon as they got back SG-2 went through the gate.

George and Liam didn't get a chance to have the talk they both so desperately wanted. All they managed was a fleeting glance as they crossed paths in the briefing room.

Sam spotted the look and decided it was time she had a quiet motherly talk with a certain Major.

Katie was released after a few days. The Grandpas and Uncles had done a great job on the nursery. Everything was perfect. Katie would be on maternity leave for six weeks. She'd spend another six weeks in the labs before she'd have to go off world again.

She loved her job and she loved gating but in the last few days her priorities had really changed. Her children and JJ were now her entire world. She loved them so much. She looked down at the man asleep next to her. He was so wonderful and she was so lucky. She stroked his arm and he smiled in his sleep.

They had known each other their entire lives. They'd always been close as children. They had a lot in common. They both loved science, mysteries and solving problems. They had always hung out together as the others played soldier. Ironic that's almost what she'd become too.

But there was never anything romantic between them. He'd gone off to college at an early age as had she. They only ever saw each other as good friends. Then they'd joined the SGC.

They had still just been friends but they couldn't talk to the others about their work, so they confided more in each other. It stayed like this until about a year and a half ago.

SG-23 had been stranded off world and she and JJ had worked practically day and night to solve the problem. When the solution had finally been found they had been alone in his lab in the early hours of the morning.

They had been ecstatic; JJ had whipped her up in to his strong and powerful arms. As he twirled her around in his excitement, he kissed her.

It was just a fleeting kiss; he put her down and they just gazed into each others eyes for a moment. Then they both had an irresistible urge to do it again. They leaned in for the most amazing kiss of her life. When their lips parted they were both gasping for breath. She'd always remember his reaction. "WOW!"

It had developed from there. It had surprised them both how strongly they had reacted. But that kiss was just the beginning. They already knew they loved each other, but that was as friends. This was something else.

It happened so quickly that before she knew it she was completely in love with him. She sighed. She'd never felt about anyone the way she felt about him and JJ told her he felt that way too.

They'd kept it a secret from everyone except George. JJ was unable to keep anything from his sister. She knew him to well and could read him like a book and she'd guessed anyway!

They'd kept it secret because they'd feared their parents or rather their father's reactions. It needn't have worried them. Jack and Daniel had been shocked at first but really happy for them.

Jack and Sam decided to have a welcome to the family party a week after the twins were born. Everyone who had been at the fateful party when they announced their engagement and immediate arrivals had been invited plus plenty more well wishers.

Mom and Dad threw great parties JJ thought as he helped Katie get the boys ready. This was no mean feat. One child needed a lot of stuff; two needed a whole lot more!

Once the car was packed they headed over to his parents home. Home, it's where he was raised, some of his happiest memories were in that house. He couldn't wait to show off his children. He liked the sound of that.

His children, he thought. Well, technically they were `their' children but well, he was a very proud daddy. He smiled, now he knew exactly how his father felt. Now there was a proud dad who wasn't afraid to show it.

JJ had always gotten on well with his father. He enjoyed confusing him with technobabble. That was something he'd learned from his mother. She often did it just to see his confused look. She thought it was adorable.

His dad was no dummy, although some people might have thought so. Many underestimated him much to their cost. But when it came to science he seemed to have a complete mental block. JJ chuckled to himself, George was exactly the same.

Katie and JJ arrived early so they could get the boys settled before everyone arrived. Sam and Jack had turned JJ's old room into a nursery for the boys and Daniel and Janet had done the same with Katie's old room at their house.

It had been decided by the Grandparents at least, that the new arrivals would be spending a lot of time with them. Katie and JJ were actually glad to have all the support. They didn't interfere but were on hand to help at anytime.

"Hey, Jay can you give me a hand in here," shouted Jack from the kitchen. "I think I need that great scientific brain of yours." JJ and his mom shared knowing smiles.

"I'm coming Dad," he called.

Sam took Katie's arm as she came into the room. "Come on let's have a chat before everyone arrives." Sam guided her to the sofa and sat holding Katie's hand in hers.

"So how are you feeling?"

"Tired, happy. I just can't believe how lucky I am. JJ is so good with the boys. He's been getting up in the night with them. He won't let me do anything!" she smiled at his mother. "You did a great job with him. He's such a wonderful man. I just can't believe it took me so long to realise it."

"You're not the only one," said Sam raising her eyebrows. She sighed. "It took me a long time to realise I loved Jack. Even then it was only because we thought we were going to die. I loved him for so long. I never thought we'd spend our lives together, so much was against us."

"But when you were finally able to be together, were you sure?" asked Katie curiously. The whole Jack and Sam romance was legendary in the family. Everyone knew they were in love for years. But no one was sure that they would ever be together right up until the fateful kiss.

"I knew I loved Jack but we'd never actually told each other. I knew he cared a lot about me." Here she smiled broadly. "We'd admitted we cared but love neither of us could bring ourselves to say it. As the years passed I didn't know if he felt the same. That is I didn't until my promotion!" They both giggled.

"Hey, no giggling," they heard Jack shout from the kitchen. Sam just laughed even harder. It was a comment they all heard often but know one else understood why the pair found it so funny.

"You know," said Sam. "I never had any luck with men." She saw the look on Katie's face. "Honestly, it was awful. I never thought I'd find anyone. Then Jack came along. I never thought I'd ever love someone like I love him. Then the children came and..." she trailed off. Katie knew exactly what she meant. They squeezed each others hands. "I think JJ is a very lucky man, honey."

"I think I got pretty lucky too."

The house seemed very full this afternoon. It was still winter time and few people were brave enough to venture on to the deck for long.

Liam was feeling extremely nervous. Things were getting decidedly weird. He and George hadn't seen each other all week except to say hi. Colonel O'Neill kept giving him the strangest looks.

George had pretty much avoided him since he arrived half an hour ago and yesterday the General had said that she wanted to talk to him today. He didn't know why. As far as he knew he hadn't screwed up lately. Basically he was very confused.

He saw the General heading in his direction and his heart sank. He looked around trying to find an escape route but could see none.

"Hello, Major," Sam gave him her warmest smile.

Still feeling uneasy he replied, "Hello General thanks for the invite." He looked down to his drink.

"Well I was wondering if we could have that chat now." Sam's gaze never left him.

Liam could feel her eyes on him, "err, sure, if you like." His heart sank even lower.

"OK then. Follow me." Sam waved her hand and Liam followed in the direction of Jack's study.

Where the hell are they going thought Jack and George at the same time? Their eyes followed as the pair entered the office. Liam hadn't been in this room before but he had heard all about the memory wall. Pictures of the O'Neill's' family life suddenly surrounded him.

He couldn't help but look for photos of a certain beautiful Lt. He found her. In one she was about 6 or 7 and was wearing fatigues and saluting her father who was saluting back. There was another of her graduating from the academy. There was one of her with her dad and brothers playing hockey.

Sam said nothing. She just watched the Major take in his surroundings. "Major," she said snapping him back to the present.

"Yes, Sir," he said standing to attention automatically.

"Relax Major, I just wanted a chat." Uh, oh, the alarm bells really began ringing now.

"Sir?" he raised his eyebrows. Since when did three star Generals just want to chat.

"I'll be blunt Liam," Liam, oh god, he was in trouble. Here it comes he thought. "This may sound old fashioned but what are your intentions towards my daughter?"

He was going to faint. He was going to faint right here in front of his General. He was 2IC of the flag ship team of the SGC and he was going to faint. OK, so he wasn't actually going to faint maybe throw up. No just as bad his addled brain told him.

"I, well, I, it's, I, I, I don't have any intentions ma'am," he finally managed.

Sam noticed the blush in his cheeks deepening. "Well, Major that happens to be the problem."

"Huh!" Sam couldn't help but smile at the confused look on his face. It reminded her of Jack.

"I said that your having no intentions towards my daughter was the problem." She said repeating herself. She'd know Liam for three years and she'd never seen him like this. It was quite endearing.

"Huh," Oh dear thought Sam.

"Look, I want to know why in the hell you haven't asked George out yet. Do you think she'll wait around for you forever?" OK, so I waited for Jack but she had to get this guy moving somehow.

"I don't know what's stopping you but if it's because she's your CO's daughter, forget it. Before I'm a General, I'm a mother and I want my little girl to be happy. She seems to think that you're the one who can do that." She raised her eyebrows. "Is she wrong?"

"Are you saying you want me to ask her out?" he asked amazed, his brain finally catching up.

"Sure and I'll make it an order if I have too!" She smiled as he just stood there mouth gaping.

"Now get out there airman and do your thing." With that she turned and left him standing there still in shock.

It took O'Connell a full five minutes for his brain to recover. The General wants me to ask George out! That was the last thing he expected. He thought she was going to warn him off. If that wasn't news enough she'd said that George wanted him. She wanted him. He thought his heart was going to leap right out of his chest. OK, Major, pull yourself together. He took several deep breathes to settle his breathing.

When he felt a little more in control of his emotions he took one last look around the walls. He suddenly realised that at this moment his greatest wish was to be on that wall, in a picture with a certain Lt., standing besides him in a bridal gown.

"Honey," Jack said coming up beside his wife. "What was all that about with O'Connell?" He'd noticed his wife had left a good five minutes before the Major had followed.

"Nothing. Just taking care of a little business." She gave him one of her wicked grins. She was up to something and he was going to have fun finding out what it was.

Liam stood looking around the room trying to spot the object of his desire. He spotted the lovely blonde standing with his team mates, Katie and his CO Colonel Hailey. She was laughing and quite obviously enjoying herself. She was even more beautiful when she laughed, her whole face lit up.

She looked so like her mother which could be a little unnerving but he didn't care. To him, he'd never seen anyone as beautiful as her. And those eyes. His heart started to race again. Get a grip, just move your feet and go talk to her, for cryin' out loud, he thought. The last phrase brought a smile to his lips and he started to move.

George was enjoying herself. Jen was filling Katie in on SG-1s latest mission. Katie seemed to be listening intently but George noticed her attention kept flicking every now and again to the baby monitor in her hand.

Just then she felt a movement beside her. She couldn't move. She was rooted to the spot. She knew who it was, she recognised his aftershave. She'd wanted to see him so much but dreaded it too.

He'd said they should talk but what if he wanted to tell her, he liked her, she was a great kid but he wasn't interested. Her mind and her heart raced as one. Just then they heard crying from the monitor.

"I'd better go see what's up," sighed Katie.

"Oh, let me go please," pleaded George. She was already besotted by her nephews and it would also give her the excuse to escape from Liam.

"Go on then," smiled Katie at the look on George's face. "If you need diapers they're in the bag by the crib."

"OK, no problem," she turned to leave.

Liam thought this could be his chance. "I'll give you a hand." Katie and Jen raised their eyebrows in unison and smirked at their retreating backs.

Liam followed George up the stairs to the new nursery. She quietly opened the door to hear not one but two whimpering noises. Liam's close proximity was sending her pulse rate into overdrive but needs must and she walked to the nearest crib.

Carter was louder than his brother. Leaning in she picked him up and started to rock him. "Do you think you could manage Frasier?" she asked inclining her head to the other crib.

"Sure any thing for you Lt." he smiled and Georges heart did a back flip. He expertly raised the child to his chest and followed her moment rocking him to and fro. It only took a few minutes for the children to settle and fall back to sleep.

Once back in their cribs George picked up the monitor. "Katie they're fine. They've both gone back to sleep."

"Thanks," came back the whispered reply.

As George was just pulling the door too, Liam spoke, "How about that talk now." He was almost whispering. She didn't know if that was because of the babies or not. Neither did Liam.

"OK," she whispered back. She turned and began heading in the opposite direction to the one they had come. Liam wondered where they were going. George led him to another set of stairs and headed up.

They eventually found themselves on a kind of deck attached to the roof. Liam had only ever seen this from below. He knew that the Colonel used it for his hobby. They'd passed his telescope on their way out.

"So?"

"So?"

Scintillating conversation here, George thought.

Liam coughed, "I had a chat with your Mom earlier," he said quietly.

Strange, he called her Mom; he never refers to her as anything other than the General. Also what had it got to do with her?

"She wanted to talk about you..." he paused and saw her eyes go wide, "and me." Now they were like saucers.

"You and me," she stammered. Her mom was a dead woman! "Like what?" she managed.

"Basically, she told me I was a jerk for not asking you out already," He smiled at her reaction. She stumbled and he caught her by the arms.

"WHAT!"

"She said if I didn't do it soon, she'd order me too."

George started to mumble to herself. He wasn't sure what she was saying but he had a pretty good idea. He caught a few words like kill her several times.

She was mad. How could her own mother do this to her? If dad had done it, fine but mom! I'm going too died of embarrassment, she thought. She tried to turn away as tears began to spring to her eyes.

"She was right," George's head shot up. "I've been an idiot. I should have asked you months ago. There were so many excuses I came up with not too. Stupid reasons. George," he placed his hand on her cheek as he turned her to face him.

"You are the most beautiful woman I've ever met. You're funny, kind, honourable and a wonderful human being. I was scared to tell you in case you didn't feel the same and I was scared that I," he paused. "I was scared because I cared for you a lot more than I was supposed too." At these words she started to laugh and cry all at once.

Liam was confused. He'd poured out his heart and she was laughing but she was crying too. She stopped laughing and with a serious face said, "Oh Liam, I feel the same. I thought you'd never notice me. So often it seemed you only saw me as a soldier if you saw me at all. And I wanted so much for you to notice me." The tears were really flowing now.

Leaning forward he said quietly, "I'm sorry for making you cry. Maybe I shouldn't have..." she silenced him by placing a finger to his lips.

"Don't be sorry. I'm crying because this is what I've been dreaming about for so long. You've been what I've been dreaming about for so long. I'm just so happy." She grinned at him through her tears.

"Why were you laughing?" he had to know.

"Remember what you said about caring about me a lot more than you were supposed too." He nodded. "That's exactly, word for word, what my dad said the first time he admitted having feelings for my mom." They both smiled.

"Then it's a good omen." They stared at each other and with out saying another word began to lean in towards each other. Their lips met gently at first. Gradually the kiss deepened until they could think of nothing else but making this moment last forever.

After several minutes they broke the kiss gasping for air. They never let go of each other, relishing the feel of the others arms around them.

"I love you, Georgia," he whispered into her hair. She said nothing. Have I gone too far, too soon, he thought.

Then he felt her slight shaking against his chest. She was crying again. He heard it then; words that made his heart soar, muffled against his chest. "I love you too, so much." She looked up at him and raised her face for him to kiss.

They stayed locked in each others embrace for what seemed like an eternity.

"You know as much as I'm enjoying this," George smiled up at him. "There's a party downstairs and I'm freezing." Her teeth chattered to confirm the fact.

"OK, let's go inside." He took her hand and led the way.

"Liam?" He turned to look at her.

"Yes honey," ooh, she liked that.

"It's Katie and JJ's party. I don't what to steal their limelight."

"Do you mean we should be discreet?"

"Yeah, if that's alright. Would you mind?" she asked shyly.

He placed a loving hand on her cheek. "I'd do anything for you. Of course I don't mind." He kissed her gently. They held hands until they reached the stairs. Then reluctantly they let go of each other. "Game faces." He grinned at her.

The party was still going strong. Sam had noted the absence of a certain Major and Lt. She smiled to herself; looks like my little chat had the right effect.

At that moment she saw Liam and George descend the stairs to rejoin the party. Their faces seemed to betray nothing but Sam knew better. There was a certain bounce in both their steps.

Once again Jack stood looking at the walls of his office. It was only now in his later life that he realised why there had been so much misery in it. Parts of his life had been so full of despair that he had seriously thought of ending it all.

But he realized now that he'd probably had to go through those things to truly appreciate what he had now. Every day he said thanks for his life.

Fate was a funny thing. He often thought of different what ifs. What if he hadn't had a gun in the house? Would he still be with Sarah? As much as he would give anything to have Charlie back he could never imagine life without Sam and the kids.

What if he'd refused to go on the second Abydos mission? God he didn't even want to thing about that. No, he truly was the luckiest man alive. In the end all his dreams had come true. And looking up at the wall were just more reasons for him to feel lucky. He was looking at his grandchildren.

He glanced at the picture of Katie and JJ and the boys taken just after their birth in the infirmary. He then took a good look at the latest addition to the wall. It too was taken in the infirmary. His new grandchild was fast asleep in her mother's arms. George had never looked more beautiful than she did in that picture holding her daughter.

"Well," Sam said putting her arms around her husband's waist.

"Well what?" Jack asked cocking his eyebrow.

"What do you think of your new granddaughter," she smiled.

"I think she is absolutely gorgeous just like her mom and grandma." Jack replied brushing his thumb across her face.

"Flatter," she grinned back. "What about her name?" Now it was Sam's turn to raise her eyebrow.

"Seems really fitting, doesn't it, Cheyenne Charlie O'Connell. Kind of a mouthful but," he paused. "I love it."

"Me too," Jack could feel her smiling into his chest. "Thank you."

"For what?" he asked puzzled.

"My life," He gave her that special smile, the one he saved for her alone. He leant down and they kissed as if it was for the first time.

The end.
