The New Guard

The General looked at the row of down cast faces. There stood three Lieutenants, two PhD's and a Major with an MD! For cryin' out loud, the General thought even if the Dr's and Lt's didn't know better, the Major should! What were they thinking!!!

"We're sorry, REALLY sorry. It just got a bit out of hand," said one of the scientists in the group. As he spoke, he raised his beautiful brown eyes to meet the General's. They were exactly like his fathers. Damn it!

"Sorry! Out of hand! Do you know how much trouble you've caused, not to mention the number of regulations you've broken!" the General said sternly, thinking about the Jell-o, ping pong balls and funny foam.

The Lt. standing next to the scientist also had her fathers brown eyes and also some of his more infuriating habits, like, the slight smirk that was gradually edging it's way to the corner of her lips.

The General's eyes rolled. At this time in your life, who needed this lot and their practical jokes! The SGC caused enough of it's own problems without any help from this bunch. The General had had enough for the day. "Dismissed. Major, will you please stay." The General ordered.

One of the group went to open their mouths. "Get out before I change my mind," and with that they began to filter from the room. The cheeky female Lt. was the last to the door. When she reached it, she paused.

"Err, Mom?" she smiled sheepishly. Sam looked up. "Is dad coming in today?" General Samantha O'Neill sighed at her daughter. "Did he say he was coming?"

"Well, yeah but I was just double checking?" She shrugged her shoulders.

"In that case he'll be here. He wouldn't miss this, he's been looking forward to it for weeks and after all your father is a man of his word. Many of them actually," Sam said under her breath. Cassie sniggered.

Georgia hesitated, "Er, OK, urm," she looked down at her boots, "er, mom? General, we really are sorry and," she looked at the Major. "It wasn't Cass' fault. She didn't know about it, until it was too late."

"Thank you Lt. Dismissed." Sam sounded stern but when Georgia looked into her mother's stunning blue eyes, she saw they were smiling.

"Yes, Sir," she said snapping a jaunty salute and closed the door behind her.

"What the hell was I thinking, Cassie, having them all assigned here together?" she said smiling at Major Doctor Cassandra Jackson.

"It was done because in their own fields they're all brilliant at what they do. Which isn't surprising considering their pedigrees. Of course I'm biased." She grinned at Sam. After all two of them were her brother and sister and well, the other three were as good as her brothers and sister.

"Hey, they were just letting off steam and from what Mom and Dad tell me about the old days you, Jack and they got up to a lot worse!" Cassie giggled at Sam's raised eyebrows and wicked smile.

"I plead the fifth," Sam laughed.

Sam stood in the briefing room staring down at the gate. She always liked to be here to watch her teams embark and hopefully watch their safe return. It was something General Hammond always tried to do and Sam had always found it comforting to see his face on SG-1's return.

As she watched SG-24 leaving on a routine follow up mission, Sam felt a familiar pair of arms thread their way around her waist. She also felt a warm mouth kiss her neck and then a head rest on her shoulder. "Hello, how's my Major?" he said softly. Even after all these years and various promotions, she would always be his Major and him, well...

"Fine and how's my Colonel?" she said lovingly.

"Well, you know what with the knees and the ..." he paused seeing the smile on her face, "er, how's your day been so far, General?" he asked enquiringly.

She turned to look at him, staying encircled in his arms. "You heard didn't you?" she asked raising an eyebrow. How was it that he'd been retired from this place for 25 years and he still had better Intel on the SGC than she did!

"Well, yeah." He looked at her sheepishly. "Actually, I've had a few calls," he saw her face. " OK, six calls in the last few hours." He looked at her with those puppy dog eyes of his, that he knew she couldn't resist. "You know, they really are sorry."

Sam laughed. "So I keep being told. God, Jack even now you are such a bad influence but," she said, giving him that smile that still made him go weak at the knees, "it's one of the things I love about you most."

She looked into his eyes, at the man she had loved for more than thirty years and knew that she loved him more every day they were together, if that were possible. Sure he was a pain in the ass most of the time, extremely stubborn and she often called him Oscar the Grouch but to her, he was damn near perfect.

Jack looked down at the gate. Some days he really missed gate travel especially the action of it all. Hell he didn't miss the mud or the sand though! So much of his life had been spent as a soldier but none of it had come anywhere near his life with Sam and their children. He had been happy with Sara and Charlie but these past 25 years had without doubt been the happiest of his entire life.

Eight years after the formation of SG-1, the Goa'uld system lords were finally defeated. It was the beginning of the end after Daniel "descended" for want of a better word, Jack thought.

After that sweet little event, the defeat of Anubis followed quickly. With the Replicators as good as gone, at least for a few thousand years, the Asgard were able to regroup and help with the defeat of the System Lords.

After eight years as Commander of SG-1, the war was as good as done and Jack had finally felt able to let it go. Jeez, he was an old man after all. He remembered the day his life had changed forever as if it were yesterday.

SG-1 were standing on the ramp, much as they did after the defeat of Hathor. The room was filed with SGC personnel and many special guests. Also on the ramp were General Hammond and the President.

Amongst the other honoured guests were the Joint Chiefs, the Tok'Ra High Council and a contingent of Asgard. Thor, Freyr and Hiemdall standing beside the Nox and many other alliance members. And of course there at the front stood a very pregnant Janet next to Cassandra and Jacob.

God, after Daniel's reappearance, he hadn't hung around. Well, Jack had decided to take a leaf out of the little Space Monkey's book! Boy, oh! Boy, did they ALL get a surprise that day. The General and President knew what was coming of course and they found it hard to suppress their smiles. The President presented several medals and gave a stirring speech.

Then the General stepped forward to the podium once more. "Please come to attention." All military personal stood tall. "From the Vice Chief of Staff of the Air force, in recognition of Major Samantha Carter's outstanding work, I hereby authorise her immediate promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Major, step forward."

Sam looked thunder struck. She looked in turn to the General and then to Jack, who had the stupidest grin she'd ever seen spread all over his face. Anyone would have thought he had been the one promoted! He was so overwhelmingly proud, he couldn't help himself. However, he'd known the best surprise was yet to come.

"The United States Air force has recognised that you have fulfilled tasks and duties well beyond the responsibilities of Major." During this speech Jack and Hammond had removed the golden oak leaves from her shoulders and begun to replace them with silver ones." It is with great pleasure that I bestow upon you the responsibilities and respect of the rank of Lieutenant Colonel."

They both saluted. Sam then turned to salute Jack. "Well done, Colonel," Jack echoed the words from her previous promotion.

"Thank you, si...Colonel." Their eyes locked. Both knew this would change things between them but unlike Jack, Sam didn't know just how much! As Sam dragged her eyes away and turned to go back to her place, the General spoke once more.

"Lt. Colonel Carter, please remain." Sam had shot a look towards Jack but his face had gone completely neutral. "Today not only does Lt. Colonel Carter receive her promotion but I am also pleased to announce that she is to receive her first command. Please recognise the new commanding officer of..." here the General paused for effect. Wait for it, Jack had thought, "...SG-1."

The moment was priceless, Jack had thought. There was a collective gasp. All eyes that had been on the General, turned to Sam and then slowly to Jack. Noticing the smile on Jack's face, they then returned their gaze to Hammond. All that is except Sam. At the announcement, she had turned to look at Jack and her eyes had not left him. Her expression, was one of complete shock.

"In closing," the General had said, bringing to a halt all the feverish whispering that had begun, "Colonel Carter's former supervisor Colonel Jack O'Neill would like to say a few words."

The looks on everyone's faces, especially Daniel, Jonas and Teal'c were priceless. Sam's, however, was a different story. "Firstly," here he paused, looked at the ceiling and then back to Thor," just checking buddy." Quite a few sniggers could be heard. "I would like to congratulate Lt. Colonel Carter on her promotion and her first command. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve with the men and women of the SGC." Here he looked towards his team.

"Never have I worked with a more dedicated or outstanding team than my own. However, it is time for the old guard to make way for the new. I mean, the knees are shot and the back, wel...," he heard Hammond cough. "Anyway, as of," he looked at his watch, "an hour ago, I am officially, a retired Colonel of the United States Air force. But I know that I leave SG-1 in the best of hands. Congratulations and good luck, Lt. Colonel Carter. With those guys," he added, looking at the rest of their team, "your gonna need it. Believe me."

Everyone applauded as he moved back to his place, deliberately ignoring Sam. Her eyes, however, never left his face. Jack never forgot that look, confusion, pain, hope? As people had begun to filter slowly from the gate room, Sam had moved towards Jack. "Why?" had been the only words to leave her mouth.

"So I could do this," he'd said, remembering back to the time loop and with that he had swept Sam into his arms. Never had anything felt so good or so right. They were eventually bought out of their embrace by the ecstatic cheers and applause of the remaining crowd that had witnessed it. Loudest amongst them were their family and friends.

"About time," called Janet Fraiser-Jackson.

From then on Jack remembered, everything moved very quickly. Six weeks later they had married. When some people had asked if they were rushing it, they had told them that eight years of pussy footing around was quite long enough!

Six weeks after the wedding Sam had discovered that she was pregnant. Score! It was probably the proudest day of his life. He'd just prayed that the kid would inherit Sam's brain, not the addled brain of a decrepit old soldier!

Seven months after that Jonathon Jacob and Georgia Janet O'Neill were born. Twins! Jack thought all his Christmases' had come at once. With the appearance two years later of Frederick Daniel their happiness was complete.

Jack proudly announced to anyone that would listen, that he was a kept man and a house husband. He joked about it but he had really loved being a full time father. He'd missed so much of Charlie's early years that he was determined not to miss anything the second time around.

However, anyone who really knew him, knew Jack's house husband routine, was not strictly true. Although no longer in the Air force, Hammond, the Joint Chiefs and even the President had deemed his experience and expertise to valuable to waste.

He was therefore employed on a part-time basis as a civilian consultant, giving tactical advise and helping to train new SGC personnel. It kept his hand in, was much less stressful on the body and kept him out of trouble. Well as Sam said, most of the time anyway!

"Jack?" Sam's voice brought Jack out of his reverie. "Do you think it was a mistake having all the kids here? I mean they're doing a great job. Better than I could of ever wished for. It's been great finally being able to let them learn all about what we've been doing for so long. But, well, after today I wondered if it was the right thing." He saw the concern in her eyes.

"Look honey, for one thing, it wasn't just your choice to have `em all here. The air force top brass had something to say about it and as for the rest, they're just kids," Jack replied.

"But that's it Jack. They're not just kids, they're SGC personnel. For cryin' out loud, four of them are air force officers," she said in exasperation.

"Yeah, but they're still our kids." She raised her eye brows but knew he wouldn't change his opinion.

It was funny, Sam thought, when ever any of the kids had gotten in trouble at school, college, home, they had always called Jack. Even Janet and Daniel's kids. Trouble equalled Jack in their mind's and they believed if anyone could get them out of it, he could. Career problems it was always their mom's. Relationship trouble and neither Jack nor Sam could work this one out, it was either Uncle Teal'c or Uncle Jonas. Go figure!

Oh, the kids, Jack thought. He loved each and everyone of them as if they were his own. Janet had given birth to her daughter four weeks before Sam and Jack's wedding. All were glad about that, really glad, especially Daniel as Janet wasn't her usual lovely, cheerful self towards the end of her pregnancies. Major understatement, he smiled but it did mean she was able to be Maid of Honour with Cassie as their bridesmaid.

Katherine Teal(pronounced like the colour!) was the apple of her fathers eye. She inherited her mothers looks, thank god, Jack thought grinning to himself and she had her fathers brain. Katie had been the most curious child any of them had ever met. Her favourite pastime was digging in the sandbox to find the things that Daniel had buried there for her.

It was inevitable really that she should follow the family tradition and become an archaeologist and linguist. She was a damn good one too. She spoke nearly as many languages as her Dad. She was so good that she was offered a post at the SGC, even before she graduated. Someone from the Pentagon had read some of her papers, on some revolutionary idea or something. Like father like daughter.

She'd been astounded when she'd found out what really went on in the mountain and what her family really did. During her tour with the SGC, she had shown that she was not only a good scientist but that she could also take care of herself. She'd quickly moved from researcher to an active SG team member.

Katie had been at the SGC for four years now and had been on SG-1 for two. Daniel had almost burst with pride when she'd been assigned to the team. He'd told Jack, he was pleased she was like him and not just a geek. Personally, Jack thought she got the cool soldier part from Janet.

Two years after Katie, Samuel Jonathon was born to complete the Jackson family. He looked a great deal like Daniel (poor kid), but on a much larger scale. Daniel was tall but Sammie was at least 6' 5" and built like a Jaffa. It seemed like his mom came up to about his waist!

As a kid he'd followed Jack around like a puppy dog. To this day and even more so since being assigned to the SGC, the Lt. worshipped the ground Jack walked on. When Sammie had quizzed his dad about Jack's "heroics" with SG-1, Daniel just rolled his eyes. He didn't really mind, his son could have had a worse role model in life.

Cassie had been a different story. She was a bright kid but had become a little rebellious as a teenager. No one knew what she wanted to do. She'd had an advantage over the other kids in the family, as she knew the nature of the work the grown ups did. After all she wasn't really born in Canada!

Janet certainly had her hands full for a while. But after she married Daniel and Katie came along, Cassie seemed to settle down. Daniel settled into the father role quickly and Cass asked to call him Dad from day one.

Not long before her high school graduation she'd sat down and had a long talk with Sam about her future. Soon after, much to Daniel and Janet's surprise, she'd announced her intention to join the air force and become a doctor and one day join the Stargate program, just like her mom.

Cass' graduation from medical school was probably the proudest day of Janet's life, Sam`s too. Soon after, Cass was assigned to the SGC. It was thought her knowledge of the program would best be kept in the family, so to speak.

Just then, they heard a noise behind them. It was Daniel with his head buried in a folder, as usual. He was no longer an active SG team member but he did still go off world occasionally, if there was a particularly interesting find. The noise they heard was him bumping into a chair. "Hey, Danny boy."

"Oh, er, hi Jack," replied Daniel. "Hi Sa., Er, Jack your here early aren't you. They're not due for another couple of hours."

"I know Daniel but is it a crime to want to have lunch with your beautiful wife," Jack said smiling at Sam.

"Well, no but Janet didn't mention she was having lunch with you," Daniel said puzzled.

Jack pulled a face and Sam sniggered. "Not your wife, you geek, mine." Jack squeezed her hand.

"Oh," was the only answer Daniel could muster. Jeez some things just never changed.

The Commissary never changed either, Jack thought and neither did the food. Sam sat in front of him prattling on about some new device SG-32 had found, while he watched her devour her blue Jell-O. She still loved the stuff even if she was a General.

He looked up to see some familiar faces enter the room. They saw Jack too. His daughter waved but they didn't come over. They took a table on the far side of the room.

Giving Mom a wide berth he thought, smiling. Well, he couldn't blame them, could he. He knew Sam better than anyone. He knew she didn't hold grudges, well not for long but she was their commanding officer and could make life difficult if she wanted too.

From his vantage point he could observe the kids. To him everyone was a kid. But these really were. He looked at his eldest son. JJ was the spitting image of his father, from his wicked grin, to the smouldering brown eyes and the very unruly brown hair.

He had his fathers height and muscular build. Much to Jack's relief though, his looks seemed to be about the only thing JJ had inherited from him.

He without doubt he had his mothers brains. Some said he was even more brilliant than her. Which had quite frankly scared the hell out of Jack for a while. But like his mother, although he occasionally blinded him with science, that wasn't his whole personality.

They got on fantastically well, he had a great sense of humour and Jack's great love of fishing. Even with the differences between them, these two simple things bought them a closeness Jack wouldn't have thought possible. JJ had a dry wit and he reminded Jack greatly of Jacob. He had that cool, stoic air about him.

JJ had graduated high school at the age of fifteen and Sam, having gone through something similar, was reluctant for him to go to college so young. Amazingly, Jack for once, had been the voice of reason. He'd said, they couldn't hold him back and Sam had known he was right.

So at the age of twenty one, PhD in hand and unknown to Sam, he had been recruited by the Pentagon. It had not been long before the theoretical astrophysist had been reassigned to the SGC.

He was, as his sister called him, a lab rat. He was a scientist and wasn't a member of an SG team. He had gone through the gate on a couple of occasions but even that was to many. He preferred to stay in his lab and not get into the action.

His twin sister on the other hand was a completely different story. She was without doubt her father's daughter. Her dad adored her and the feeling was mutual. George, as everyone called her, had her mom's colouring except for her eyes and had her figure but everything else was pure Jack.

There was no doubt in anyone's mind, that she was the ring leader behind today's little escapade. Sam had said from the moment she'd learnt to walk, she'd be trouble. Which of course had thoroughly delighted Jack!

As a kid, she enjoyed nothing more than getting dirty and playing solider. When she, Fred and Sammie played soldiers, she would always be the one in command, leading the attack on the unsuspecting JJ and Katie in the sandbox.

Jack would never forget the day when at four years old she had declared her intention to join the air force. She had that determined, stubborn look of Jack's on her face and they'd laughed. But she'd stuck with it and on her eighteenth birthday joined up. Jack walked around with such a big grin on his face for days that some thought the men in white coats would be along sooner or later.

George had flown through the Academy with flying colours. Some found her to be a smartass,(no surprise there!) stubborn and a flexibility, when it came to certain regulations but she was loyal, honest, hardworking, smart when it came to military tactics, determined and an excellent leader of men and women. All her classmates respected these qualities, as did her commanding officers.

She graduated second in her class from the academy, coming only second to a geek, who'd spend the rest of his life chained up in the basement of the Pentagon probably, Jack had said. He'd gotten a dig in the ribs from Sam for that one.

She'd been short listed after her graduation as a possibility for the SGC but Sam had resisted, much to Jack and JJ's disappointment. JJ really wanted his sister there. He found it hard not to tell her everything he'd found out about their parents exploits.

They were very close and he hated keeping secrets from her. Especially one as big as this. He knew she'd just love this job. So in the meantime, George had moved around various commands excelling and impressing the top brass wherever she went.

It came to a head when the Chief of the Air force himself asked General O'Neill way she didn't want such an excellent officer under her command. Sam relented and George was reassigned. That was a year ago. She'd been a regular team member of SG-2 for the last six months.

Then of course there was sweet little Freddie. Named after Jack`s uncle, who`d originally inspired Jack to join the air force. He was twenty two and a real heartbreaker. He looked just like Sam. He had her stunning eyes, mega watt smile, blonde hair and sly sense of humour.

He was strong, bright and dependable. He kept his head in a crisis and was terrific with high explosives. He'd arrived at the SGC three months ago and had yet to be assigned as a team regular.

He was certainly real popular amongst the female population of the base! George said half of them were in love with him already! He had an extremely active social life, very un mom like, Jack laughed to himself.

Freddie and his dad had great fun in his youth experimenting with cherry bombs and later fireworks! Much to his mothers dismay. He was also great at thinking up practical jokes so although George would have lead and executed the whole deal this morning, it had probably been his idea in the first place.

All the kids were in the Commissary except Cassie. Jack had no doubt she was getting ready for the return of her husband and kids. He smiled, he couldn't really wait for their visitor's arrivals either. For an old guy these visits got him really psyched.

Just as Jack and Sam finished up their meals, lights started to flash and the PA system blared, "Off world activation, off world activation. General O'Neill please report to the embarkation room." As she stood and turned Sam noted with pride that the "kids" had changed. George, Sammie and Fred were in their dress blues, JJ and Katie in smart suits.

She flashed Jack her mega watt smile. "Show time," and taking his hand they walked to the gate room to welcome their distinguished visitors.

As they arrived in the gate room, they were closely followed by the others and several SFs holding very big guns. Even though they didn't have to worry about the Goa'uld, there were still unfriendlies out there. "Sir, receiving Chu'lak High Council IDC." At that moment Janet, Daniel and Cassie also entered the gate room.

"Open the iris," the General called. The iris receded and the glow of the event horizon filled the room. Sam had seen this thousands of times but every time she saw it, she felt a tingle run up and down her spine.

At this point the event horizon began to ripple as figures began to emerge from the gate. Two large, black men emerged first, one in traditional Jaffa robes, the other had on an SGC uniform. Both men carried staff weapons.

They were closely followed by two smaller middle aged men, one in Tok'Ra garb, the other was in normal Earth clothing and they were each carrying a small child. Finally two more soldiers, a male and female, in SGC uniforms followed.

"Welcome High Chancellor," Sam greeted the Jaffa formally. Before he could answer, Jack moved forward quickly.

"Tea, buddy, how ya' doin'." Everyone grinned. So much for diplomacy, good old Jack.

"I am very well, O'Neill. General, I hope you are also well."

"I'm fine, Teal'c. Thank you. It's great to see you."

"You also."

As they moved down the ramp one of the children saw Cassandra. "Mommy," cried the little girl Jonas was holding. She wriggled free and wound her way through the grown ups till she reached her mother. Seeing this, her three year old brother did the same, breaking free of Jacob, he scampered to her side, hugging her legs.

They'd only been gone for two weeks but she'd missed them like crazy. This had been their first trip through the gate. She looked up and smiled to her husband. Rya'c smiled back.

After his father had returned to Chu'lak, following the system lord's defeat, Teal'c thought that Rya'c would benefit from living among the Tauri for a few years, just as he had done.

He had joined the SGC and later had taken his father's place on SG-1, where he still remained. While on Earth he had meet Daniel and Janet's daughter and his short stay had become an extended one.

Sometimes he felt he should be helping his father on Chu'lak but Teal'c had been extremely happy when he had found happiness with Cassandra. He was very fond of the girl and this connection kept his friends and family close. Well as close as a few million miles could be. He adored his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

Rya'c had taken six year old Drey'auc and little Ro'nak, to see his father for what the Tauri called, a vacation. Jonas Quinn and Jacob Carter had decided to join them. His father, returned to Earth every few months to see his friends and his grandchildren.

This time though, it was an official visit. He would be meeting with the President to discuss various things including their Jaffa, Tauri alliance. Therefore, except for Katie, the remainder of SG-1 had been sent to accompany them back to the SGC.

Suddenly, "Gampy," Drey'auc shouted, launching herself from Cassie's arms into Daniel's, now open ones. Everyone laughed. Sam turned behind her, Ok, officially Teal'c was here to meet President Paul Davies USAF (Ret.) but for now it was a family get together.

Sam waved to her family and they all gathered around, everyone talking together. Putting on her best command voice, "OK, people," everyone paused to listen. "I think these guys will probably want to clean up." She said looking at the new arrivals and received nods from them.

"Right, First Lt. O'Neill," she said looking up at her son. "Can you escort our visitors to their quarters and I say every one meets at our house in," she looked at her watch. "Three hours." This was greeted by several yes' and nodding heads. "Fine see you there."

In between phone calls that morning Jack had managed to get the house ready for the invasion. In half an hour several members of the SGC, past and present would be descending on the house.

Sam gave one final look around the house to check everything was all right. Jack was outside stoking up the Bar-B-Q. Sam leant against the door jam staring at her husband.

Her husband. Wow even after twenty-five years she still found it hard to believe he'd picked her. Let's face it, he really could of had his pick especially at the SGC. Half the base females had the hots for Jack, the other half for Daniel!

Jack hadn't really changed a whole lot. He was completely grey now. He was carrying a little more weight but he still kept himself pretty fit. Sam was glad of that, after all Jack was past seventy now. It scared her sometimes that with advancing years, she might, in the not to distant future be without him. She shook herself away from these thoughts and looked back once again to Jack.

He caught her staring at him and sent her one of `those' smiles. Even now he could make her go weak at the knees with one of those smiles. He left the grill and moved in front of his wife. He bent forward and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Just as he was leaning in again, the doorbell rang. "Ready for the onslaught, baby?" he said as he kissed her lips softly.

Sam nodded and as Jack passed her to answer the door he squeezed her butt! No Jack hadn't changed at all.

Sam looked around her home and the party was in full swing. She loved this house so much. From the deck it looked out over the mountains. It was filled with so many happy memories and now they were making more. She cast a glance over to one side of the room.

JJ and Katie were deep in conversation as they usually were, no doubt discussing the latest discovery from P843 676. Her gaze wondered on. Ah, Ferretti. He'd retired a few years after Jack. He'd surprised everyone by becoming a highly prized rose grower of all things.

She smiled, he'd created several varieties including the Kawalsky rose and her favourite the Abydonian Star Rose. Several of which were now in a vase on a nearby table. He always sent a dozen of them on their two anniversaries. They arrived on their wedding anniversary and the anniversary of Jack and Sam's first mission together, when they went to Abydos.

At that moment a group of her very favourite people wandered over to talk to Lt. Colonel Graham Simmons. They hadn't spotted her yet. Janet hadn't changed in the slightest. She was still a devoted doctor, wife and mother. She was just as tiny and beautiful but was now quite grey. She also ruled the infirmary with just as stronger a will as ever she did.

For someone so small she could still put the fear of god into very large soldier men. It's amazing how many of them were afraid of her very BIG needles. Without doubt she was definitely Sam's biggest weapon when it came to keeping her people in line!

Standing with his arm around her waist was Daniel. He was still the same old Daniel. As absent minded as ever and as brilliant as ever. At the moment he was having what looked like a very in depth discussion with Jonas.

After Daniel rejoined the SGC, everyone thought it would be really difficult. After all Jonas was with SG-1, where would that leave Daniel? Amazingly Jonas and Danny came up with the solution themselves.

Both loved gating but both never had enough time to do the research they wanted. So their solution, becoming part time SG-1 members. Both got what they wanted and for Daniel it meant more time with Janet away from the infirmary!

Daniel and Jonas to most peoples surprise became really good friends, very quickly. No surprise to Sam though, they had so much in common.

Sam was still reminiscing when a small blonde hurtling figure leapt at her. She opened her arms and swung the child into them. "And who might you be?" Sam smiled at the child.

"Aunt Sam," she said scrunching her face, "don't be silly. You know who I am, Hailey Samantha Quinn." She giggled.

"Oh, Yeah, I think I remember you." Sam joked. It was a little ritual of theirs. Hailey gave Sam a huge hug and a big kiss.

"So I can see Daddy," they cast glances in his direction, "but where's Mommy, honey." With her usual perfect timing, Jennifer Hailey entered from the garden.

She spotted Sam and walked on over. "Hi, General," she smiled.

"Hello, Colonel," Sam smiled fondly back to the Commanding officer of SG-1.

"Hailey, are you bothering Aunt Sam," Jen said taking her daughter.

"No, Aunt Sam, likes it when I give her a hug," her face changed as she thought about something. "But not as much as Uncle Jack does when I give him one." The five year old slide down her mothers side and giggling, scampered off to find Jack, no doubt.

"Ma`am, have you seen my husband anywhere." She said raising her eyebrows.

"Yeah, over there with Daniel. Let's go rescue Graham," Sam said threading her arm through Jen's.

Jack could feel someone or something tugging at his pants. He turned to Freddie who was helping with the grill. "Yo, Freddie, do you feel an earthquake or something," he said winking and looking around, without looking down.

"Don't think so, Dad," he said winking back and chancing a look down.

"Down here, down here, Uncle Jack, Uncle Jack."

"Well if it isn't the prettiest girl at the party little Miss Hailey Quinn." She giggled and with that Jack scooped her into his arms. He received a big sloppy kiss and a strangle hold hug for his trouble.

"Hey, honey, no fair," whinged Freddie with a grin, "how come the old guy gets all the sugar." He hung his head.

"Freddie, Freddie, don't cry. I'll give you a kiss too." She held out her arms, so Freddie could take her.

"Hey, less of the old." Jack smacked Freddie's arm. "Fred when you and your girlfriend have finished," Hailey giggled again and buried her head in Freddie's chest, "keep an eye on the grill, buddy."

"Sure, Dad," he said paying little attention, too busy making the child laugh.

Jack wandered through the yard, saying hi here and there. Jack glanced back, Hailey was perched on Freddie's hip, while he flipped steaks on the grill.

She was such a sweet kid. The darling of the SGC. She had the sweetest nature of any child they'd ever met. Not once had anyone seen her cry. Even when she'd broken her arm, she'd only whimpered then put a weak smile on her face.

She and her mom were real lucky to be here. After his retirement, Jen had eventually joined SG-1. God, Jack shook his head. She and Jonas were as bad as him and Sam. Well, with a little help, he smirked, they'd finally got it together.

When Jen got pregnant they were overjoyed. They'd been trying for awhile. In the end there were complications during the birth. Jonas had almost lost his wife and child within a few hours. It was touch and go with both of them for a while but they were both strong.

What was it he'd sarcastically called Jen during training, a four foot nine fighting machine. Well he was right. She was one hell of a tough little cookie and so was her daughter.

He quickly scanned the room. George was with JJ and Katie. They looked very intense. What was up with those two lately, Jack wondered to himself. There were still a few faces missing, he noted. Sammie and Dad weren't here with their charge yet.

Teal'c was chatting with Rya`c and Major Liam O'Connell, the other member of SG-1. Their friendship reminded him of his and Teal'c's. He looked again at O'Connell. He seemed nice enough. Sam and the rest of the team spoke highly of him. He was good looking and had a sense of humour a lot like Sam's. Jack didn't know what it was about O'Connell that bothered him, he just did.

I wish these two would just get on with it, thought George. "Look just cough, say you have an announcement and do it," she said with exasperation.

"It's not that simple," Katie said in hushed tones.

"Oh, for cryin' out loud," George snapped. "Do you want me to do it?"

"No," her brother looked unsure. God, she sounded just like Dad. "No, I'll do it soon. We can't do it yet anyway." George raised her eyebrows. "Sammie's not here yet."

"Oh." She decided to shut up. She then let her mind wander. She knew where her mind would wander to. Or whom? There he was with Rya'c and Uncle Teal'c. God, he was absolutely gorgeous.

Major Liam O'Connell was the most wonderful guy she'd ever met. One problem stood in her way. It wasn't rules or regulations. Basically he didn't know she was alive. Well, for lesser mortals this would be a problem.

She didn't come from a family of high ranking officers without learning anything. Hell, it took her Mom eight years to get her man. She could be patience, she was young! SG-1 and 2 often hung out together. It seemed natural considering the already existing friendships.

Liam saw her as a capable soldier and as far as she could tell nothing more. Oh well, she'd work on it. She hadn't told anyone how she felt not even JJ. Although, he was a super brain, so she suspected he might have figured it out. But being the sweetie that he was, he hadn't said anything.

Damn it to hell! The voice in Jack's head screamed. That's what bothered him about O'Connell. He'd just seen how George had looked at him. Damn, damn, damn. She was in love with him. He should know, he looked the exact same way at Sam. Damn, Damn. He stared daggers into O'Connell's back. Oh, boy, would he have to talk to Sam about this.

Sam looked across to Jack. What the hell was he looking at. Oh dear. She watched as Jack glanced from their daughter to Liam and the look he gave him. Oh dear, she thought again. Bless him, Jack still thought George was a twenty four year old virgin!

Sam knew why Jack might think that. Over the years there hadn't been many guys, well three actually but an adoring daughter was hardly going to discuss her lovers with her father, however close they were. After all she loved him too much to give him a heart attack!

Sam knew it all of course. Despite the fact everyone saw George as a Daddy's girl, she and her Mom were incredibly close. Sam had a relationship with her daughter that she had missed with her own mother's early death.

There'd never been anyone serious, well serious enough to tell Dad about anyway. But Sam wasn't blind either. Unlike her husband though, she'd noticed how George had looked at the Major. She knew how her daughter felt but she'd noticed no signs of the feelings being reciprocated.

She liked O'Connell. He was a good soldier and a good man. She approved of her daughter's choice. I wonder, Sam thought, if he's holding back because she's his CO's daughter. That would be enough to frighten any guy off.

Hell, she knew better than anyone about the golden rule. If you wanted to live a long and happy life, never, ever, ever mess with your General's daughter.

At this point the front door opened and suddenly the area around it went dark. Almost having to duck to come in, a large figure entered.

Suddenly a figure shot quickly across the room. "Sammieeee," George said as she flung herself at him. As she reached him, she jumped. She landed with her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist.

Sammie had started to turn a deep shade of scarlet and his family, who knew why, were laughing their socks off. Sammie had inherited his mother's mischievous sense of humour and twinkling eyes but for all his size and good looks, he was extremely shy. Painfully shy at times, usually in social situations and/or around woman.

George was still clinging to him. He was just standing there, his arms not touching her just pointed straight out in front of him. All those laughing knew George had done this to her best friend on purpose just to embarrass him. She and Freddie seemed to think it their duty as his best friends to make him blush at least once a week.

"Hey, Sammie, you got a limpet too, man," Freddie said tickling the child still in his arms. This also bought several laughs from the people around them.

"What are you doing with my Granddaughter, Lt.," came a loud voice from behind the very flustered young officer.

"Absolutely, nothing Sir," he answered nervously.

"That's what I thought. George put the poor guy down, will ya," said Jacob.

Deciding Sammie had probably suffered enough, she jumped down. She grinned up at him, with her I'm really sorry, I couldn't help it smile and shrugged her shoulders.

"Hi, Grandpa." She then bent down and gave the aged man in the wheelchair a big hug. "Hi, uncle George, how are you?"

The familiar Texas drawl replied, "well, I'm fine thank you, sweetheart. Tessa, Kayla and the kids sent their love."

Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn it! As the whole scene had played out, Jack's attention had not really been on his daughter. He had been focusing on a certain Major's reaction. And boy, oh, boy, he did not like what he saw. If looks could of killed, Sammie would surely be pushing up daisies right now.

This gets better and better thought Sam. So O'Connell did feel something for her baby. Oh and she was going to have some fun with Jack later, she was sure. However, the one person who would have been thrilled by the reaction, missed it completely.

What the hell was going on, thought O'Connell, as he gazed on in disbelief as George jumped Sammie Jackson. Well OK not quite the right phrase he thought. But what the hell was she playing at flinging herself at Jackson like that. Aren't they just friends? She'd never shown any interest in Sammie or any other guy before.

He should know he'd been watching her for months. No dates, no flirting, no nothing. Well, sometimes he thought. No, sometimes he felt she might be looking at him but he knew he was imaging that. Why would someone like her have any interest in him?

God, but she was beautiful, smart and one hell of a soldier. Some judged her unfairly because of her parents. She was their CO's daughter but he'd seen her in action. And what action. No, she was something else alright. Damn it why'd she have to be his General's daughter. Even worse than that the legendary Colonel Jack O'Neill's daughter. Damn it.

The party was in full swing. Everybody was enjoying themselves. As usual Jack and Freddie were the life and souls of the party. But Georgia noticed every now and again, her dad would give her a funny look. What's got into him? I'll ask mom later, she thought.

All around the old and new members of the SGC, were telling war stories. It still amazed her what and who her parents really were. Lets face it they were fantastic parents. A little unorthodox, maybe but great.

Mom would often disappear for days at a time but wow did she make up for it when she got home. And of course Dad was always there. It was funny really thinking of all the times Dad had made their lunches or done the laundry. Jack O'Neill, tough guy, doing housework.

Somehow she and her brothers had always known their parents were cool. They just had no real idea of how cool. They'd often met people who worked with or used to work with them. The kids had always wondered why they often seemed in awe of their parents, they were almost revered in some cases.

Then she'd been re-assed to the SGC. That was a real eye opener. First she'd found out all about the Stargate. Unbelievable in itself. Then that not only did her mother command the facility but had worked on the project for over thirty years.

Next came the realization that not only her mom worked there but most of her family. JJ, Katie, Uncle Daniel, Aunt Janet, Cassie, Rya'c, Jonas, Jen and that Dad and Teal'c used too. It seemed the list went on.

To clinch the lot thought was finding that her beloved Grandpa was in fact part alien! And not only him but Teal'c, Rya'c, Jonas and even Cassie. For cryin' out loud, half her family were aliens! She thought nothing could top that. God was she wrong.

Once she was assigned to the SGC, she had access to a lot of old mission files. After a couple of days of hearing various rumours, most of which she didn't believe for a minute, she had found a whole box full of files mysteriously waiting for her in her quarters. God bless Mom!

She'd spent every free minute devouring those files. Sweet, the truth was even more fantastic than the rumours! Not only was Jacob a host to Selmac but both mom and dad had been Tok'Ra hosts too.

The original SG-1 had done so many cool things. Like saving Earth, how many times? Nine, ten, she'd lost count. Her parents had been the best in the business and everyone seemed to know except their kids! She was just glad to be apart of it now. It was the best job in the world. Or should that be the universe.

"Maybe now would be a good time," Katie said nervously.

"Well, maybe we should of told the folks first," JJ whispered just as nervously.

"We agreed," she looked up into his eyes, "that we'd do it in public. That way Jack and dad can't yell at us." She glanced at him again." Well, not much." She tried to smile but Katie was finding it hard.

JJ looked down at her and smiled. He squeezed her hand. "It'll be fine. Hey, I'm bigger than them."

"Yeah but not my brother, your not," she was grinning now. So was he.

"OK. Let's do it now before my nerve goes completely." She nodded and they walked to the centre of the room.

JJ cupped his hand and put it to his mouth. "Hmm, hhhh, hmm," he coughed to get peoples attention. It wasn't working. He looked to Katie, his eyes saying, what now?

George watched her brother. Oh for cryin' out loud. They'll never do it at this rate. She stood and walked to her brother. Wagging her eyebrows she said loudly, " yo, people, quiet down. These two have an announcement to make." She turned gave JJ the patented O'Neill smirk and sat in an empty space on the sofa. JJ just glared at her.

She hadn't noticed whom she'd sat next to, until she felt a tingling in her arm where they touched. She turned and blushed as she looked into Liam's eyes. Oh, my god she thought he's blushing too. Sweet!

Wow, she's even more beautiful when she blushes he thought. Oh hell, I'm blushing too.

"I, er, we," JJ said nervously, getting the attention in the room. " We, er, have an announcement."

"I told them that already, get on with JJ, gee," George said impatiently. JJ glared at her again.

"We, Katie and I, well we've decided to get married." He reached out and took her hand.

"Huh," was all Jack could muster. He looked confused.

"But, well, but your not even dating," said Daniel a little more coherently.

"Yeah, that's right," said Jack finally catching up and pointing his beer bottle at them.

"Actually, we've been dating for a while." They suddenly both found they're shoes very interesting.

"What? How come we didn't know?" Jack exchanged glances with Danny.

"We, well, we, er."

"Way to go expressing yourself there, son. Oh and congratulations," Jack smiled. He looked at Sam and noticed that she didn't seem at all surprised and neither did Janet.

"Er, there's something else."

Bring it on, thought Jack.

Here goes, "I'm pregnant."

"Oh, honey, that`s wonderful," Janet said rushing to her daughter.

"Jack, close your mouth sweetie," Sam said as she passed him on her way to the happy couple.

Grandpa. I'm gonna be a Grandpa. Wow. Cool.

The last of the guests were just leaving. Sam was seeing them to the door. What a day. I'm gonna be a Grandpa. He smiled to himself. He thought it would make him feel old when it finally happened but he didn't. He felt great. Oh and his sweet Sam was going to be a Grandma. His smile grew even wider. Now, she, he thought did seem far to young.

He stood looking at the pictures on the wall in front of him. They called it their memory wall. It had been Sam's idea. They'd moved into this house a couple of months before the twins had been due. Jack's old house had had very few personal photos on display. He only had one picture of Charlie out and that was in his bedroom. She was not having that here.

It started with just a few important events. Their wedding, a picture of the two of them when she had been made a major then a Lt. Colonel. One of Danny and Janet's wedding, her father and her. The last family portrait of her with her mother, father and brother. And there were pictures of Jack's parents and brothers.

Of course there was a large photo of Charlie. It took pride of place right in the centre of the wall. Sam had found it buried in a trunk. It was the last school picture Charlie had had taken. It was great. Just at the right moment someone off camera had made Charlie laugh. His whole face was lit up.

From there it grew. Pictures of Sam in her hospital bed with all the new borns. Jack had always known what a special woman Sam was but he soon discovered how remarkable she really was. Somewhere she'd found a similar picture of Sara in her hospital bed holding a new born Charlie.

She'd insisted that go up too. How many women would be comfortable enough to have a picture of their husband's ex-wife on the wall. Sam had told him it was because she didn't want to hide Charlie or Sara from their children. They had been a very important part of Jack's life and he shouldn't be ashamed to let the children know it. Amazing woman.

They had pictures of every important event in theirs, their children's and their extended family's lives. Weddings, graduations, promotions, births, teams, christenings. All were present. It started on one wall and was rapidly taking over the entire area he used as his office just off the main living space.

Soon he thought they'd be adding more memories. He felt a hand touch the small of his back. "Hi, honey," she slid under his arm, "watcha doin'."

Jack smiled at the phrase. "Just thinkin', baby."

"Now don't go straining yourself." She smirked at him.

He looked down at her and grinned. "Oh I won't, Grandma," he said emphasising the last word. He pulled her closer. She wrinkled her nose.

"How do you feel about it," she looked at him seriously.

"Really," she nodded. "I think it's absolutely fantastic. I'm really happy for them. They make a great couple. After all," he looked at her lovingly. "We O'Neill men have great taste in woman."

"The women don't do to badly either." She reached up placing her arms around his neck. He held her in his arms. "Thank you." He whispered in her ear.

She pulled back slightly. "What for?"

"My whole life. I love you, Sam."

"I love you too, flyboy."

The end for now.
