"New Beginning" (1/1) by Lisa Michelle haven599@msn.com

Daniel rolled over in bed and glanced at the bedside clock. Six-thirty in the morning. Might as well get up. He thought he slept for ten or twenty minutes last night, but every time he closed his eyes he thought about what was happening to Sha're. Why did they have to take her? Why?

Anger and guilt fueled his decision to join Jack and the others and go through the Stargate back to Earth. He had to find Sha're and Skaara and bring them back to Abydos. Hopefully, Kasuf would forgive him for what happened as well as the attack on Abydos and the lives lost.

After they returned from Chulak, he was given a room on the base and a uniform to put on for the next day. Turning on the light, he blinked at its intensity and grabbed his glasses off the table, heading for the bathroom.

The shower made him feel a little bit better. He dressed in the clothes they gave him, feeling like he had just enlisted. It was almost seven in the morning. He decided to go get some breakfast before he started his new life.

Opening the door, he found a guard posted outside. "May I help you, sir?" he asked Daniel.

"No, I . . . ah, was just going to get some breakfast," Daniel told him. "Where is the cafeteria?"

"Down the hall, then take a right and follow it to the end," the guard replied. "Would you like me to take you there, sir?"

"No, I think I can find it. Thanks, anyway."

Daniel did find the cafeteria. There were only a few people there, due to the early hour, and all were military. They all looked up at him, knowing he obviously didn't belong here.

Ignoring them, he got a tray and chose eggs, bacon and toast and the biggest cup of coffee they offered. Even the kitchen staff must have known who he was because when it came time to pay, the lady just smiled at him and said it was okay. He forgot he had no money.

He turned around with his tray and wondered where to sit. Spying the man that helped them break out of the prison on Chulak sitting all alone, Daniel decided to go over and introduce himself.

"May I join you?" Daniel asked when he arrived at his table.

"You may," Teal'c replied.

"I don't think we've officially met," Daniel said, sliding into the seat across from him. "Daniel Jackson." He held out his hand.

"I am Teal'c," the man replied, ignoring Daniel's offer to shake hands.

Daniel lowered his hand and started to dig into his breakfast, noticing Teal'c had barely touched his. "You're not eating?"

"The food here is different from what I am used to," Teal'c said, stabbing a piece of egg with his fork. "We do not eat things like this on Chulak."

"I forgot how much I missed this," Daniel said, taking another long sip of his coffee. "Oh God."

"Is something wrong, Daniel Jackson?"

"No, it just that I haven't had coffee in over a year. They don't have anything like this on Abydos."

"But you are human," Teal'c remarked.

"Yes, but I lived on Abydos. Jack and I . . . well, it's a long story."

"Then I must apologize, Daniel Jackson."

"For what? You didn't do anything."

"I am afraid that is not true," Teal'c stated. "I was there with Apophis when he came to Abydos. I am partly responsible for what happened to the Abydonians."

"What?" Daniel asked. "Oh God, it was you, wasn't it? You took Sha're."

"Who is Sha're?" Teal'c asked.

"My wife, dammit," Daniel got up from the table, backing away as if it had just caught on fire. "The woman that was standing up there with Apophis!"

"She is Ammonet now," Teal'c said.

"What?" Daniel asked. "No, she's not. She is a sweet, innocent woman, not that lifeless thing I saw up there!"

The guards started advancing towards them. "Is there a problem, sir?"

"No, I was just leaving," Daniel said. He turned around and almost bumped into Jack.

"Daniel, what the hell is going on?" Jack asked, waving the guards away.

"Do you know who this is?" Daniel said, pointing to Teal'c.

"Yes, he's the guy that saved our asses."

"No, he's the one who took Sha're," Daniel said. "Now he's going to help us find these aliens? We're supposed to trust him? Someone that takes innocent women for Apophis and-" Daniel shook his head in frustration and picked up his cup of coffee. "This is insane, Jack." He walked out of the cafeteria.

"Daniel, wait-" Jack said, then turning to Teal'c he said: "Stay here. I'll be right back."

Jack followed Daniel down the hall, eventually catching up to him when he got back to the door of his room. "Daniel-" Jack caught the door with his hand.

"What?" Daniel said, walking into the room and sitting on the bed.

"We need all the help we can get, Daniel," Jack told him, closing the door. "Teal'c's decided to come over to our side."

"And that just erases all he's done in the past?"

"Okay, I'm not having one of these arguments right now with you, Daniel. We've got bigger things to worry about."

Daniel took another long sip of his coffee then set it down on the table, staring at it as he began to speak. "Twenty-four hours ago I woke up next to my wife and the biggest worry in my life was what to eat for lunch," he explained, before turning his head to look at Jack. "Now look at where I am? I've joined the freakin' military and am working side by side with the man who kidnapped my wife."

"Hey, I'm not sure Hammond's going to approve you joining SG-1 or Teal'c for that matter."

"I don't care. I'm going to find Sha're with your help or not."

"Look, Daniel," Jack said. "I'm sorry for what happened to Sha're and Skaara. We've all got to work together now to find these aliens and stop them."

"I know," Daniel said.

"Good," Jack replied. "Now, we've got a briefing at oh nine hundred. I'll come back then, okay?"

Daniel nodded and watched as Jack left, shutting the door behind him.

This couldn't be happening. His whole life as he knew it was over. Sha're was gone. Skaara was gone. Kasuf must be furious with him. Even if he finds Sha're and Skaara, would he be able to come back to Abydos?

That kiss Sha're gave him before he went off to the cartouche with Jack and the others really was a good bye kiss. Oh God. He missed her so much. The past year had been like a continuous honeymoon for them. Sha're was as eager to learn about Earth and its customs as he was to learn about Abydos. She even came to the cartouche to be with him while he worked on the translations. It was the best distraction he ever had.

"I will find you, Sha're," he said. "I just hope when I do you will be able to forgive me for ending our perfect world way too soon."
