"RENDER AWAY "
Was the calm glib matter of fact comment from the Colonel to the Tok-Ra Cargo vehicle that was about to rescue them..Of course he had everything under control......????!!!!.
The Major explained that the Cargo ship was low on Life Support and had no engines functioning . The Tok-Ra operative suggested that they be ringed up onto her ship and then she would extend the cloaking shield so that it encompassed their Cargo Ship , which would in effect allow her to tow the Cargo Ship with her.......The Colonel was pleased at this plan as it meant that they didn't lose the ship and hopefully it could be repaired again for use in the future..
SG-1 were ringed aboard and sat quietly in the hold of the Tok-Ra Cargo Ship..It would take about an hour to get back to Earth and land at the base cloaked and undetected by the Earths Radar... The Colonel lay on his back and closed his eyes, Teal'c went up front and assisted the Tok-Ra Operative in the navigation seat...Daniel stared out into the sky....and The Major sat against the wall near to the Colonel .
" I wonder what's happening down on the base Colonel ..?" " I don't think they will be expecting us home somehow......." " No Sir...!"
" At this moment I would take a guess that General Hammond is welcoming all the evacuees to the Alpha Site back through the Stargate to Earth Major......Nearly ended up there myself you know...." " How do you mean ...?"
" Well ..If you hadn't got that Cargo Ship to function..I was under orders to go to the Alpha Site and take Command....."
" I didn't know that Sir...."
" No ..I didn't tell anyone......"
" Would you have gone Sir..?"
" Reluctantly...Yes.....As I said I was under Orders.......Thank goodness for your technological expertise
Major......."!
" Not so expert Sir....We were about to die on that Asteriod about 20 minutes ago........Not the best move
we've ever made.."
"Ah Yes ...but Major....We're still here.....We're not dead......and .....We kind of saved the Planet .....
.AGAIN......You saved the planet AGAIN.......Chill out ......Relax...We're going home....I know it's been a
long haul but we're nearly home........"
" You have such a simplistic way of putting things Sir.......I admire your resolve.....and the way you just
bounce right back ......."
" Carter.....I face my own death and all of your death time and time again....If I didn't bounce back ..as
you so eloquently put it ....I'd die of depression...Now.....Tonight when Teal'c and I came back and realised
the hull had been breached ...Well...Blind Panic set in...I expected to find both you and Daniel ...lying on
the floor of that damn ship ....dead........BUT....You we'ren't so ...That perked me up ......You were both
well and I didn't have to face that .....So I bounce back ....I find good reason to bounce back Carter and
that's what keeps me going .....motivated ...alert......Always look for the silver lining......In this case
the silver lining was the Escape Pods....Thank God.....Team work ..In tune....We all think fast ....survival
instincts at their sharpest ..Quick thinking and action...That's what separates us from the other teams
Major.....and I wouldn't want it any other way ...."
" Quite a speech Colonel ......"
" Yes well It's amazing the crap I can talk following the threat of Oxygen deprivation....."
" Can't wait to get home Sir....."
" It won't be long now Carter.....I said relax ......shut your eyes and relax......"
" Yes Sir...."
Down on The Base.......
"Welcome back Major Davis......."
" Good to be back General ........Have you found out what happened yet..?"
" NO .....It apparently just .....vanished ."
" Impossible..."
" May -be Major ..but how do you explain us still being here then.."
" I can't Sir......I'm just relieved that we are......
" Me too......Now Major ..How long before we have everyone back here and re-settled......."
" Another 3 or 4 hours Sir........Ehmm..General...any word of SG-1 ?."
" None Major......I guess NASA was right ......If they did collide at 60 K per second there won't be much
left ........At least it will have been quick and painless.....and I can keep in my heart that they had
something to do with us still being here..."
" Yes. Sir....Of course Sir....."
The Cargo Ship landed at the Airbase on the secluded Airstrip and remained cloaked as it detached the damaged Ship and deposited it's passengers and left swiftly. The Colonel radioed the Airbase for a Jeep and drove SG-1 to the Cheyanne Base......They all checked in at security as if everything was normal and made their way down in the elevator to the SGC . " You three go get checked out in the infirmary ...You especially Carter and don't neglect to tell her about the spike you got from these crystals....OK.....?" "OK..!!"
" Daniel...Make sure she tells Janet ......" " Will do Jack ..and you .,....where are you going ..?" " To check in with the General ......I'll catch up with you down there later..." The Colonel made his way up to the Generals Office and passed the Control Room and the Gate Room on his way
...As he expected it was a hive of activity ......Busy didn't quite describe the numbers flooding through
the Stargate.......A sight to be beheld.......The Gate in civilian operation...!!...How did the security
aspect work now...??...Thank God that wasn't his concern..Someone in Washington could work that one out...."
He knocked the Generals door......
"Come in....."
" Hey General ....It's a bit busy down here...Thought you'd like to know we're back ..I'm just going down to
the Infirmary if you need me....."
" Fine Colonel ....I'll catch ..late..........Ehm......Just a minute.. Colonel ...Jack ..Is that you ...?????
...What the .......When.......How......"
" Sorry General ..I think you missed a few.....Why...????......Where...????...Whatever...???....etc etc...."
" But you......Where on Earth did you come from...?"
" Well Sir.....Not from Earth ...that's for sure......."
" That Asteroid ...It disappeared .......Was that you ..?"
" Yes .........Well .....Not ME exactly...It was ..Daniels Idea , Carters Calculations and on my order......Oh
and I think Teal'c nodded his head in agreement........Team Work .,...You know the usual...."
" And the others...??? The rest of SG-1 ....??"
" Seeing the Doctor..I hope.....Carter took a bad jolt when she was working on the engines.....She's a bit
jaded and light headed but I think she's Ok...... the Doctor will soon put her right....."
" When would you like to de-brief Sir...... ?"
" When you are ready Colonel .......Any time you are ready .....I'm so glad to see you ....We all thought you'd
definitely had it this time ..."
" Yes... Well...Truth be told Sir ....So did I ...but don't tell the rest of them I said that ...OK...?"
" OK.....See you later Colonel ....."
The Colonel walked briskly out of the Generals office....and went through the Briefing Room.....Major Davis
was looking out of the Window down into the Gate Room..The Colonel went over and stood beside him and looked
out with him.......
" Busy Place tonight Major........"
He walked towards the door....
" It sure is Colonel .........COLONEL.......??????????"
Major Davis watched him leave and smiled to himself and shook his head in astonishment....He mumbled to himself
" More lives than a cat that man.....Thank God for our sakes...."
" Colonel ...Come in.....Up on that bed 'till I check you out......"
The Doctor gave him a thorough check ....He was perfectly fit and healthy ..No problems.......She filled in
his record card.
" It's good to have you back Colonel ..We'd written you off this time....."
" Yes so the General was saying........Hey Doc.....How's Carter..?.....She took a pretty bad jolt from
these Tok-Ra crystals in these hyperdrive engines.......Ehm...She did tell you didn't she.....?"
"Yes she told me Sir......I couldn't find anything wrong with her ...She's fine and I think on her way home
by now...."
" Home..???..But she won't be at the De -brief........That's not like her ......Not like her at all......"
" Sorry Colonel ....She just said she wanted out of the place and I agreed it would be a good idea.....I
completely forgot about the de-brief ..what with all that's going on down here....."
" It's OK....Doctor ..It's not your fault.......It's just she would normally check with me if she needed
to go .....that's all.....Don't worry about it.."
It was along detailed de-brief as the Colonel explained all the events.Arriving at the Asteroid , nearly crashing, setting the bomb, discovering the Naquatah , defusing the bomb, YELLOW WIRES , The Major being spiked, the hull being breached, repairs , escape pods, plan 3, Hyperdrive and finally facing a slow death through the diminishing life support system........ They all went home totally exhausted.
The Colonel was at the base at his usual early bird time of 06:30hours. For once he beat Daniel into work .........He made his way to his office after changing into his Base Greens.....It was quiet this morning ....The way the Colonel liked it .....
Ring Ring Ring .....
"O'Neill......"
"Good morning Colonel O'Neill..I have Major Carter for you ......"
" Major..???......"
" Colonel ..I'm sorry ..I won't be into the base today .....Is it alright to take it as leave Sir....??"
" What's wrong Major..??"
" I just need some time off Sir......Bit of a headache this morning.....just need some time ..Sir....."
" Sure Carter....No problem ..but may-be you should come inlater and be re-checked by Doctor Fraiser..."
" NO..I'll be fine..Colonel.....Just need the day off......"
" OK....??....If you're sure you're OK...??"
" I'm sure......Speak to you later Colonel.."
" You Relax and Take it easy Sam .."
The Colonel was troubled as it was extremely unusual for the Major to take time off work.....Even when
she was really ill she would want to be strapped to her computer or microscope......He'd give her a call
later to check on her..."
The Colonel completed his written report of the Mission and decided to phone Carter.......
No answer......
He made his way down to Daniels Lab.......
" Daniel , Have you finished your report...Can I have a look at it....."
" Sorry Jack......I was sure you asked to look at my report.......??"
" Less of the sarcasm Daniel ..That's MY job......Now can I look at your report or not....."
" Sure....It's there on the workbench ....."
The Colonel stood and flicked through the report looking for something...
" So ..How long were you and Carter submitted to the Atmosphere before going into these pods......?"
" It tells you there if you actually READ the report........"
" I can't see it....."
Daniel grabbed the report and scanned it ......
" Oops sorry .....It should be in here ...Thanks ..I'll change that ....Good job I hadn't filed it....."
" Did I hear an apology Daniel.....??"
" Sorry Jack...."
" How long..??"
" A few minutes....Once we realised the atmosphere was venting we just both instinctively thought of the pods......Why..??"
" Nothing !..I'm just looking for something that's not here..." " And that would be..??"
" I don't know......just something more to explain why Carters not at work today ..I guess.."
" Jack .....She said she had a headache....."
" Yea..Right .......a headache ....Tell me the last time a headache stopped any of us from doing
anything......."
" Well if you're that concerned ....Go call her..."
" I already did.....She's not answering her phone.....Any of them....."
Jack was fiddling with something as usual.... " Then go see if she's OK...."
" NO.....She'll think I'm checking up on her...."
" You are checking up on her........May-be she just needs some time alone.....She's a woman , remember
Jack .....We were all cooped up in that Cargo Ship for 2 weeks .....She probably just needs some space...."
" Yea....You're probably right Daniel ......I'll catch you later......"
It was mid evening and most of the Senior Officers were in the Officers Mess having a well earned drink
after the past few days......The base was almost back to normal......The Colonel was very quiet.....
" You OK..Colonel ...?..You're unusually quiet......"
" Just tired Sir...."
Daniel heard the Generals comment and made his way over to The Colonel ..... "You're not still worrying about Sam are you ...?.."
" No.....Yes......She's not answered her phone all day ..I've left messages on her home phone, cell phone
and pager and she hasn't got back to me......It's ..SO...not like her Daniel .....I'm worried....She was
pretty down when we talked on that Tok-Ra Ship..but I thought she was OK........."
" Jack ...I think you're over reacting .....She'll be back tomorrow......Just wait....You'll see...."
" Yes..You're probably right...Now....I think it's your round Daniel .."
" 2 Beers and a whiskey chaser .....Oh!...and put it on the Colonels tab....."
The Colonel just smiled and got on with the evening..."
The Colonel and Daniel stayed on the base that evening......
The Colonel was slightly later in waking up next morning.....There was a knock on his door.....
" Yea ..Who is it.....??"
" Sorry to disturb you Colonel ....It's Sargent Siler......The Gate diagnostic has found an error this
morning and we can't get in touch with Major Carter......."
" I'll be right there...What time is it...?"
" 07:00 hours Sir......."
" Thanks Sargent...Give me a minute....."
The Colonel pulled on his Fatigues and made his way up to the Control Room......
" What's the problem Sargent......?"
" SG-12 are due back Sir and they can't get a lock on chevron 7.....The diagnostic has just thrown up
an error message and I'm sorry Sir but I don't understand it......"
" You say you called the Major.......Have you tried her cell phone she should be on her way ..?"
" Yes Sir....No answer Sir...."
" OK....First things first .....Have you tried to dial out ....Sometimes that clears the lines ...
doesn't it..??..."
" Yes..Sir..but I need an officers authority to dial out when there is no active team travel ....."
" OK...."
The Colonel typed his security code into the computer..... "You got it.Sargent......"
CHEVRON 6 LOCKED.....
CHEVRON 7 ENGAGED.....
"OK..Sargent !!!.......SG-12 ..This is Colonel O'Neill ..Please respond....."
" Colonel ..We can't get a lock on the Gate......"
" Is everyone OK...??"
" Yes Sir..."
" Try re-dialling once it shuts down Major Townsend.." " Will do Colonel ..."
" Shut it down Sargent...."
The Gate started to dial in.........

OPEN THE IRIS
" Welcome back SG-12....."
" Thank you Sir....Was a bit worried there..."
" The line was busy ...You know how it gets......."
The Colonel and Major Townsend chatted .....The Major went to the Infirmary .
" Sargent ....Run the diagnostic again and report back to me immediately" "Yes Sir...."
The Colonel made his way up to the Generals Office..... "Morning General ....."
" Morning Colonel ....Problems..???"
" Yes..Gate Problems.....SG-12 couldn't dial in.....We've cleared it for now but Sargent Harrimon is
running a diagnostic as we speak ......Sir...?? .Have you heard anything form Major Carter....?"
" NO ....Only what you told me yesterday Colonel .....Is she not back on base....?."
" Don't think so ....I'll just check .......HI security .....It's Colonel O'Neill here....Has Major Carter
signed in this morning.."
" Not yet Colonel ......Do you want me to tell you when she arrives....."
" Yes..If you would please...........No....Not on base General and not answering her phones yesterday or
this morning....."
" You look worried Jack .."
" Yes Sir..It's not like her ......Anyway ..I'd better check up on the Gate before I do anything else
Sir...."
The Colonel was standing in the Control Room ..It was almost 09:00 hours....The Gate diagnostic was
proceeding as routine......Daniel appeared at his side..
" Afternoon Daniel........"
" Very funny .....How long have you been up ...?.."
" 07:00 hours....Gate problems......"
" OH.....So ..Sam ..???Is she here...."
" No....!!"
" OH...."
" What Daniel ..Trouble with your vocabulary this morning......" " Too much beer and not enough sleep .."
" More sleep than me....."
" I don't know how you do it Jack ..You went to bed at 4am ....the same time as I did......"
" Years of practise Daniel .....Years and years of practice......and an SF rapping on my door at 07:00
probably had something to do with it....."
" OH..lucky you....."
" Colonel ..Diagnostic complete........There is still an error but the computer has repaired it for now
......We can re-check it when the Major gets here..."
" If she gets here........."
Jack mumbled to himself with a furrowed brow and quizzical look.
He made his way down to the locker room and showered and changed into his civvies........
He then quietly made his way to the surface and jumped into his Jeep ...
In 25minutes he was at The Majors door......Her car was in the drive..
He knocked the door ......No answer......
He knocked the door again........No answer........
He went round the back of the house ....No-one there ..curtains closed ....No activity.......So what
now...?
He went round the front again and just as he was about to put his shoulder to the door .....the door
opened slightly.......
" Oh thank God you're OK........Sam .....It's me Jack ......"
The Major just looked and slowly released the security catch on her door and opened it to allow his access... ....
" Sir....Oh.....ehm..I .....What time is it......?...What are you doing here.....I phoned and told you I
wouldn't be in ....."
" Yes you did....Yesterday....."
" No ..I phoned you this morning........"
" No you didn't....."
" Yes I did....."
The Major was pretty agitated and clearly annoyed at being disturbed. "I called you ..You told me to come in later today to get re-checked ..I said I just needed some time off.
...........You could leave me alone for one day Sir......I just wanted to Veg out and well sleep for a
while......"
" Fine....OK.....I was concerned......Lets just put on the radio or the TV and check out the date will we..??"
"What are you talking about ......Look if there are problems at the SGC......Can they not just hold on to them
for one day ...."
" One day ..No problem..It's when it hits the second day and no phone call to explain ..That's when there is a problem...Carter."
" What are you talking about .....?"
" You phoned me yesterday ....Tuesday ..and now it's Wednesday...That's why I'm here ..I was concerned ..It's not like you "
" Oh....I'm sorry ..I just ....I don't know Sir..I don't have an excuse....." " If you don't mind me saying , Carter , you look really rough" " Thanks .."
" Actually..That was a compliment ..You like shit......" " Thanks....Actually...Now that my eyes are in focus ..You don't look so good yourself Sir...." " Yea well.....My excuse is too much drink last night in the Officers Mess and not enough sleep...What's your excuse...?..."
" Don't have on Sir.....Don't know.....Just tired I guess......"
" I have to say ........How long have we worked together.....??"
" 5 years give or take..."
" I don't think I ever remember in that time...you being in this state....What's really wrong ....Sam ..?..Is there something worrying you that I can help with....??..." " Good of you to ask Sir...But I think you're the last person that can help me with this one......" " So that means that you know what is bothering you...."
" Oh...I know alright ..but ..I'll handle it......I've handled it before.."
" Sam ....Look I came here to see you're alright .....I'm not going anywhere.....We've known each other a long
time....May-be I can help.....Why don't you talk to me....?"
RING RING.....RING RING......
It was the Colonels Cell phone.....
" O'Neill....!!"
" Security said you signed out Colonel ....Everything OK.....??" " I came looking for you General but you were on the phone to Washington ...I just thought I'd pop out and see how Carter was....."
"And....???"
" She's here Sir...I'll talk to you later........Call me if you need me...."
" OK Jack ...Just see The Majors OK.....NO need to rush back ..We're fine here....."
" Thank you Sir...."
" General Hammond checking up on YOU now Jack...."
" Jack.....!!...Well that's a step in the right direction......Now are you going to talk to me...?..You are my
2IC you know ...I should know if something's bothering you ......"
" 2IC......Yes......EXACTLY
" And that means..???"
" Nothing Sir....."
" Oh here we go again......Look .....Why don't you go and have a shower, a bath ..something...Relax ..I'll put
on some Fresh Coffee and may-be we can sit down like two adults and talk through whatever needs to be talked through ....I really don't want you back at the base if you've not sorted out these problems of yours as I think they'll get worse....."
" Gut feeling Sir...??"
" Gut feeling Major....Works every time....."
" Yes I know it does....But Ok...I'll go have a shower........The coffees in that cupboard up there....."
The Major returned wearing pale blue jeans and a white T-Shirt....looking brighter and there was a smile on
her face.......
" Ah ..That's more like it ..That's my Major.......and a smile as well ...I'm impressed ..The Magic of warm
water.........."
He handed her a cup of coffee and they went out into the garden and sat in the sunshine...
" Is everything Ok at the base Sir.....?"
" I'm not here to talk about the base Sam ....so don't try changing the subject......What's with you ?..You
were a bit subdued on that Tok-Ra Ship......So just tell me what's eating you and may-be you'll feel better."
" Doubt it...."
" Try me....?"
" If only.."
" What ???"
" Nothing....."
" Sam ..You're not really making much sense at the moment.....Try a sentence...I'm good with sentences......"
" I think ....just being faced with my ..our....mortality again , a number of times in such a short space of time ...It just kind of freaked me this time....I know you said just bounce back ....and I'm trying but there is so much up in the air , unsaid , things I haven't done....I don't know .....I'm not usually this ....emotional ...."
She was having difficulty with her words as the emotions were catching..... " What kind of things Sam ....I've always thought you were doing just what you wanted to do and you were
pretty much single minded about it....."
She didn't answer him.......
" Sam ...?"
" Single minded......yes ....single......EXACTLY...."
" If you say EXACTLY once more....without explaining I'll....I'll." " I know...you'll shoot me...."
They both laughed ...if a little nervously.
Sam sat with her coffee in her hand and looked over the cup at the Colonel ...All he could see were these big blue saucer eyes and they totally melted his heart.... "Hey ...Don't look at me like that with these eyes...." " Look at you like what ...?.."
" I don't know..Like...well That....."
" Why not..."
" It makes me uncomfortable..."
" Why....?"
" I don't know.....Hey I'm the one supposed to be asking the questions...." The Colonel looked over at her with a deep frown on his face..... "What..?...Why are you looking at me like that..." " Like What.. Sam ..?"
" Like...well.....That....."
"Didn't we just have this conversation....?" SILENCE
" OK...Back to Basics.....Are you happy at the SGC....?" " Yes..."
" Are you happy with SG-1..?!"
" Yes...."
" Are you happy with me as your CO..." " Yes...I mean...No...I mean ..You're the best Co I've ever served with....but....." " But what...?...Is this what this is all about ...Have I done something to upset you ...?...Is it me you're pissed at....?"
" No....Oh ..You just don't understand and I just can't get into this with you I'm sorry......."
" NO Sam ..You're right ..I don't understand and I won't until you explain it to me......"
" I can't ..."
" I'm afraid you have to and That's an order Major......."
" You can't order me....."
" Oh I can ..I'm on duty and you're ....well at this precise moment you're actually AWOL......."
" Very funny ...."
" It's a fact.....Major...."
SILENCE
Jack watched Sam closely as tears began to build up in the corners of her eyes......She jumped up to get a
tissue..
" Now look what you've done to me......."
" I never touched you......"
" NO...EXACTLY...."
" Damn it Sam ....another... EXACTLY.........I'm about to ,lose it here...."
" So ..Lose it...."
" What ....?"
" I said ....So LOSE IT ...Let me see you losing it..You keep threatening to lose it and you never do . .so .....LOSE IT....."
Jack didn't know where to look or what to do ..She was standing over him defiantly goading him into LOSING
IT......
He stood up to face her and went to open his mouth to shout at her and there it was......THAT LOOK......the
tears glistening and ....THAT LOOK.....The only thing not there was the Goauld Force Field ......They stood
frozen to the spot.....Both wishing the Force Field was there as they didn't know what to do next .......
"Where's that damned Force Field when you need it...?."
Nervous laugh...Jacks attempt at diffusing the situation ..but this time it wasn't diffusing.......They stood
still only inches apart ......and they just stared into each others eyes......Tears started to stream down
the Majors face and a glint of a tear was appearing in the corners of the Colonels eyes.....which made her
worse......
The Colonels voice was quiet and deep......
" Is this what all of this is about Sam ...?"
She nodded...unable to get any words out......
" But I thought we had this under control....."
She nodded in agreement and then shook her head furiously to indicate no way ......
" Not under control then ...."
She shook her head again......
" Any chance of a few words Sam ..I'm struggling here......"
She choked out the only words she could think of to say ...
" I love you Jack ......"
SILENCE
" Damn it .......How am I supposed to respond to that ...??...Sam ....Don't do this to, yourself...I'm really
not worth this ...and well you know the situation we're in and it's not going to change.....We really can't
get into this ......and ...well ...and .......Oh ....Crap.....Come Here ......!"
At that he reached for Sam and she slid into his arms ........She sobbed uncontrolably.........Jack just held
her and tried to comfort her .......
" Sam ...How long has this been eating away at you ...?.."
" Ever since that Zatarc testing and I realised how you felt about me.....I just , every now and then need you
and can't be with you ...It's tearing me apart now and every time we ..well ...nearly die...we sit and we talk
and we never tell each other how we feel and I'm just sick of it.....and I'm scared ....scared that I never get
a chance to feel about anyone the way I feel about you ..and .....and......"
Jack lifted her face towards him and gently placed a tender kiss on her lips..........
She looked into his eyes....
" Jack ....You kissed me..."
" Yes ..I did......"
" Jack ....Do you love me...?."
" Yes. I do ........"
The next kiss was tender gentle and full of emotion as they sealed a pact that should have been sealed a long
time ago ......
" There you go Sam ..I think you can safely say .,...I just lost it......"
They then sat quietly in each other arms in the sunshine .....just
thinking , reflecting......wondering.....
RING RING .....RING RING.....
" O'Neill......"
" Colonel ..I just wondered if you will be back and will the Major be back .....The Gate is still playing up .
